Barely losing 6 weeks in

(Ryan Emahiser) #1

First of all Richard and Carl I love the show and am still catching up on podcasts. I have been following keto for almost six weeks and I am only down about five pounds, I have had times where I have felt energized and felt like I may have been in ketosis only to see that I have barely dressed. I just started logging my food so hopefully that helps, I have also quit using sweeteners like stevia to try and get me out of this rut. On occasion I will have some burboun but have hardly drank, and I dip stokers long cut chewwing tobacco at least three times a day. I hear how all of these other people in the forum talk about their fast weight loss success, and even with regular working out I’m really slow paced. Any advice would be appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Keep calm and keto on.

I was like that a couple of months then one day I noticed a different taste in my mouth… took me a while to figure … ketones.

I found the holy grail!

Yea I’m going strong, and on the positive I’m not gaining when I do go down. I’ve been taking out all sweeteners just to be safe, and after some calculations realized I may be eating to many veggies that are putting me over my 20g of carbs.

It is extremely common to initially lose weight (water weight) and then stall (Post Introductory Stall Syndrome). Usually this will continue for 1-2 months (in my dad’s case 3). After which you start losing again.

During this time… insulin is coming down enough to make body fat available (if insulin resistant), hormones are being regulated, and your body is becoming fat adapted.
You might notice some "NSV"s (non-scale victories) during this time.
For example:

  • Clothes feel looser
  • People comment that you appear thinner
  • Aches and pains disappearing (dad found his heart pain from CVD disappeared)
  • Feet shrinking/shoes not feeling as tight
  • More energy
  • Less frizzy hair
  • Better/clearer/softer skin
  • More stable/improved mood

It is best to keep track of these + measurements (waist, thigh, arm, hips) as measurements generally also tend to go down even during PISS.
Just Keep Calm and Keto On. Focus on <20g of carbs, moderate protein, and fat to satiety. Don’t restrict calories, and don’t restrict fat.
In a few months time (or less, depends on the person) you’ll start losing the actual weight so your lb amount reflects how you’ve started to look!

In other words… this is completely normal and you’re not doing anything wrong. It just takes some time for your body to be able to access body fat and use it as fuel.

Thank so Siobhan that makes me feel better, I’m tired of being fat and tired and will stick with this way of living.

No problem at all, in no time at all you’ll see the scale start to move. The same happened to me and @carl and plenty of others too. Focus on the NSVs for now, and you’ll be just fine.
This way of eating is very sustainable and I think you’ll end up liking it!
