Banting Diet

#1

I just read “The Real Meal Revolution”. The Banting Diet seems the same as a Ketogenic WOE. Has anyone become a Certified Banting Coach? Sounds like a good program, but I am wondering if it is worthwhile and well run.

I’ve done straight up Banting from the beginning. Not a coach, but a real fan. I send everybody there.

I don’t know if they are both considered exactly the same, but the force behind Real Meal Revolution is Prof Noakes…who is a well-respected luminary in low carb high fat community. He is a pioneer in this field and fights a good fight. In my view, his work is brilliant.

Noakes adopted the Banting name as a nod to Mr Banting who was one of the first in the 1860s to use a similar diet for weight loss.

Noake’s past science is also one of the driving forces behind the high carb diet that has throttled America and the world for 30 years so he is indeed making up for his past errors.

Banting is a solid diet but unfortunately a pricey system to join.

Cheers!

You don’t need to join anything (I didn’t), just peruse the food lists and develop your own timeline for transitioning through them. The website makes you give an email address to receive the updated lists in a pdf format but I’ll show you through the back door:

I actually eat much stricter than Banting because I get an insulin response from a lot of the stuff it allows. For instance, I like the idea of nuts and nut flours, but my instinct tells me to avoid them for now. I bought some but they’re still sitting there in the original bag, untouched. Then again, coffee is nummy and you can pry that from my cold, dead hands.

I started low carb eating after reading a newspaper article (I had decided to ‘do something’ about my weight, and fell across it) and within about 3 days I had found a group on fb which promoted the Real Meal Revolution approach.

Bought the book, read it, and even though I chafed (and still do) against some of the details, I broadly follow their guidelines. I retain their reticence about processed foods, seed oils, legumes etc. I’m not a pure enough banter to want to train as a coach, however.

Oh bloody hell.

I’ve been listening to the Noakes podcasts and they keep mentioning Banting, and it just clicked that name was in a PDF “Eat Fat and Grow Slim” By Richard Mackarness M.B.,B.S. (1960). that I had started reading.

William banting (1797-1878) was the fashionable London undertaker who made the Duke of Wellington’s coffin.

I’ll find the link and post it here later.
