Bacon is bad for me

(Bob M) #1

I stopped eating bacon a while ago. The reason? Nitrates. Ha! Had you there, for a second!

Not because of that, which is complete carp (what we say when we don’t want to say “crap”), but because bacon is like crack to me. This morning, I went jogging, then had eggs and meat. I made bacon for the kids. Not only did I eat way too much bacon, I could not stop eating bacon. If I eat ham or beef, I can not only stop but cannot eat more.

With bacon, I can eat and eat and eat and…

Your mileage, of course, might vary.

:bacon: =

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #3

And your point is?

(“Too much bacon” = semantically null, btw.)

totally concur. budgeting is my only bacon limiting factor :joy:

I think this is a very good point (although in terms of my own ‘want-to-eatability’ I would group ham in with bacon).

Processed food is to me more palatable (much ‘eatier’), than ‘straight’ food. I find bacon, ham, pepperoni, salami, sausages and pate very moreish - and although I really enjoy straight steak, pork belly and mince, I find it much easier to identify when I’m full when I eat those than when I eat the bacon etc list!

Ditto dairy - cheese and cream cheese are to me much ‘eatier’ than straight cream.

My fix for this is the fact that you have to cook it first. So I only fry up 2 or 3 slices at a time.

My typical breakfast is 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon. If am in the mood for a bigger breakfast, 3 slices of bacon.

If you pre-cook an entire baking sheet full of it, I can see where the urge to eat too much of it can be there. I get this sometimes when I bake up a tray of 8 chicken thighs at once. I will end up eating 3 or 4 of them that first day, when they are hot and smell (and taste) so great, instead of portioning them out for meals for the whole week.

I could have written this word for word. Legit.

(hottie turned hag) #8

me too. I’ve given it up recently as am stalled.

 I had been worried that my made-up words like ‘eatier’ might have not made any sense! Glad they did! :+1::bacon:

My wife and I prepped for an 11 hour trip last night. Naturally we baked a pound of bacon. We both laughed when we saw the packaging on the bacon had a built in zip lock for resealing. “Who would only fix a couple of slices??” Bwaaahahahahahahaha!! Keto humor is real folks!

So, we are in the car today and I began eating up some of the bacon we prepped last night… I showed her the frosting (i.e. bacon grease) on the slice as I popped it in my mouth! :kissing_heart::bacon::bacon:

Is this possibly because of the saltiness of bacon and other processed foods and you just need/want/crave the salt? Just an idea…

Uncured bacon is very bland but you can cure it your self with celery powder:

I have this with almost all food I really like except eggs. If it’s some exotic food (i.e. not my usual food) and it’s tasty, it’s hard to stop. I am very used to eating a ton of some tasty food that is complex enough (if it has one ingredient, I reach my limit earlier I think, it’s surely true in most cases, maybe there is some exception though. I love variety).
If I eat a lot of satiating food first, I probably eat less though. Not always, super tasty food tempts me much and sometimes it’s very hard for me to reach full satiation.

So it’s quite normal to me but I don’t eat bacon, only similar fatty pork parts (1-2 times a year but I plan to raise this number), it’s easiest to get them smoked but I love fresh things too and I need a bigger amount, obviously…

But if I love something, I can buy it and I don’t think it harms me or my principles, I will eat it. I can even learn moderation, I practiced that a lot, still far from perfect but I came a long way  But I understand it doesn’t always work for everyone. (It doesn’t always work for me but those cases involves some tasty carby food I just can’t eat a morsel only.)
