Bacon and accidental fasting

(Mary) #1

Someone posted the other day about that guy who ate nothing but bacon for a month and had marvelous results. Ok, sez me - I love bacon and weight loss has been non-existent for 3 weeks; let’s give it a go. I cooked up an entire package of Costco bacon; forgot to check the package but it was at least 500 gm, maybe 750. And I ate it. All of it. This little feast took place between 3 and 4 pm on Saturday. I have a strangely delayed appestat and didn’t notice how full I was until nearly bedtime. I was fairly uncomfortable overnight but felt fine by morning. By bedtime, I realized I hadn’t eaten anything all day, other than cream in my coffee. And the best part was that I hadn’t even noticed food all day. It was completely invisible. Huge NSV. So here I am at 40 hours fasted and I’m pretty uninterested in eating. Ok, I noticed the brie quietly aging on top of the fridge but that’s as far as it went…

So, if anyone can’t imagine having an accidental fast, I strongly suggest you eat an entire package of bacon and see if that changes your mind.

Oh, and I lost 2 lbs…

As a believer in bacon I love this!

I’m fasting right now but am eager to try this experiment at some point!! :bacon:

One thing to remember is that bacon is salty. The resulting water retention can easily mask fat loss.

Does that still apply to folks who shed water and salt due to being Keto though?

Sure, water retention due to salt is different than due to glycogen. Once you become lipolytic you’ve depleted your glycogen. That’s why people usually experience a significant weight drop initially. It can be enhanced as well when switching off of processed, salty foods.

Once lipolytic, salt is the big driver of weight flux, as you really can’t flux fat in any significant way, at least on a daily basis. I can easily vary as much as 10-15 lbs. in a day due to salt, but I’ve really never been able to drop more than two pounds of fat in a week, even in the beginning.

I guess it was my understanding that salt is continuously flushed as Keto lowers insulin which is the lever that instructs the kidneys to retain salt. Which is why we’re always replacing electrolytes on this WOE.

I have not experienced salt induced water retention since going Keto so I assume we are all having unique experiences.
