Back in ketosis - Finally!

(Dawn Michelle) #1

After a small carb-a-thon for my birthday weekend, I’m finally back in ketosis. From February 14-18 I had a few sugar-laden desserts and some other random carbs. Not the cotton candy, bags of skittles, and Doritos of my past, but still quite carby. I got back on the keto/IF/ADF train on February 19. Today (February 24), my blood ketones are back in range. Yahoo! That took longer than I expected.

Are there any of you out there who occasionally go on a carb bender? If so, how long does it tak you to get back into ketosis?

I don’t quite do THAT, but if me and the wife want to eat a “normal” meal… we do. It’s usually nothing too bad, sometimes we still eat at a steakhouse like we would but we eat the bread/rolls, maybe we go get pizza and fries or a normal burger. Typically a cheat MEAL but in any case never feel bad for that. If we have to feel guilty about eating something we want, or depriving ourselves at a party etc then that’s the point where keto really IS the restrictive “diet” that the anti keto’rs think it is. If your eating on plan 90% of the time you’re doing GOOD! How many of the anti fat crowd avoid fat to that level? I couldn’t really tell you how long it takes us to get back into ketosis as neither of us check that stuff anymore. The urge to check that stuff will fade the longer you go and realize it doesn’t matter. Couldn’t even tell you where my ketone meter is, and the ketonix is long since sold. I lost 100lbs and with the exceptions of when I did long fasts by ketones rarely go over the 0.5-1.0 range but typically I hovered in the 0.5-0.8 area. I’m also a huge believer in metabolic flexibility. Since we adopted that mindset and ate “normal” things more often we stopped having the horrific pushback from our bodies when we did. During my first year keto if I ate normal I would have terrible headaches, feel sick, fight to stay awake when I crashed post meal, none of that happens anymore. My body no longer freaks out if I throw it a curveball. It burns the carbs off and I keep on going.

I was having a non keto item about once a week, every ten days. A glass of milk, or a tamale, or an English muffin. I never got kicked out because I’ve been doing this for ten months. Can’t eat off plan for another month, as I am doing the non dairy challenge, and all my treats involve dairy.
