Avocados and water and bloating

#1

I basically do OMAD. As I’ve mentioned before I will often eat a lot of salt during this meal, partly a mental thing, partly needed probably. Afterwards I will start to feel thirsty. But at night I will add 1 and 1/2 to 2 avocados (in addition to the avocado I eat at dinner) for a dessert because I can’t stuff all the calories in at once and I need to gain weight and they are good magnesium and potassium.

Two things happen after this that bother me.

  1. I panic a little because the avocado is pure fat and no protein. It feels unbalanced.
  2. If I drink water after the avocados I bloat up bad. Do avocados and water not mix perhaps?

The avo is actually also a lot of fiber. Whether you consider that good or bad is up to you.

There’s nothing wrong with them being mostly fat, there’s also a lot of potassium which helps balance the sodium, as well as fiber. That said, for many a lot of fat can cause bloating, sodium can sure as hell cause water retention and bloat which makes it worse, especially when your potassium isn’t in balance with the sodium. Sodium pulls water into cells and holds it there, potassium pulls it out. For many that’s let’s pronounced on keto since low carb eater hold less sodium (usually), I don’t, plus many blindly go way over the amount of sodium they actually need, keto or not.

Also, some people pull off OMAD without an issue, but its very dependent on both what you’re eating, and your digestive system. For me to get in what I need in one meal (around 3500 cals) it would be an all out assault on my digestive system. I’d feel like garbage, bloat and carry most of it into the next day. By the time I actually processed it through, it’d be lunch the next day, and in any way that mattered, I wouldnt really be doing OMAD, it’d just be a one meal a day mind game.

Reactions to the two things that bother you…

1 - Feelings of panic are real. If they’re irrational, then a combination of knowledge and de-sensitization are the best solutions. If they’re rational, then panic is a signal that you’re not making a wise choice.

2- To be blunt, eating two avocados for dessert does sound a bit much for most stomachs to tolerate right after a (presumably) large meal under OMAD.

I agree with @lfod14 above that OMAD may just be a bit much (i.e., too few) for you at this time. There’s a balance to strike between eating too frequently (causing elevated insulin throughout the day) vs. not eating frequently enough (and overwhelming your digestive system when you finally do eat).

Find your “sweet spot” (in a sugar-free way  )
