Autophagy on Morning Edition?

(Stephanie Sablich) #1

I think I might be away from the radio by the time this story airs, but NPR’s Morning Edition just previewed a story by saying, “We’ll talk about a study that shows you can age more slowly by eating less.”

The times, they are a-changing.

EDIT: People in the study who didn’t need to lose any weight, restricted diet (25% deficit) for two years allowed metabolism to slow and cells to be more efficient, eliminating excess oxygen in the cells and slowing down aging. Because it is NPR, they always show both sides, and referenced the dangers of a slower metabolism, effectively meaning that for people who have a lot of weight to lose, they must progressively eat less and less. This “other side” researcher said he is a proponent of “mini-fasts,” meaning 900 calories a day, 5 days a month. Autophagy was not mentioned at all.

So, take from that what you will.
