Ate unlimited fat, reduced protein, lost bodyfat, gained lean mass

(8 year Ketogenic Veteran) #1

I didn’t know what my LBM was first three years ketogenic. I guessed 120-130 based on my lean weight as an athlete in high school.

I decided to eat 1 gram protein per pound of my estimated lean mass. I believe I came to that figure through the ankrl keto calculator.

Now I know my actual lean body mass, to the gram per DEXA. And with that confirmation, began to study recommended protein amounts.

I decided to take the middle road that Dr.Stephen Phinney recommends. That would be approximately .55 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass, (LBM).

Conclusion, I was eating 100 to 120 grams protein per day up until my first DEXA.

Now? 70 grams per day since the last DEXA.
That is a SIGNIFICANT drop in dietary protein. As you will see, I did not lose LBM, I gained LBM (muscle).

I ate more fat that ever, and I LOST bodyfat, not gained. I lost over 1% of my body fat since my last DEXA three months ago, and I GAINED over 4 POUNDS of lean muscle!!!

FAT IS NOT A FUCKING LEVER.

INSULIN IS THE LEVER

CICO is a myth, and overeating protein is a waste.

I am over the moon at my results, but this is exactly what I had been expecting.
I’m at 730 pounds on the free weight leg press by the way

I had a DEXA done in 2013 and never really knew how to read/calculate the information in order to use it correctly until recently (this week LOL). I just went back over those results and if a place near me still has a special happening I’ll be purchasing a package of 3 scans to use over the course of a year. What surprises me now is the amount of LBM I had in 2013, and I’m ~really~ curious as to what it will be since starting my strength training and cardio regimen in 2014 and having it progressively intensify since. I’m really in awe right now for so many different reasons - the main one being I thought I was doing myself a disservice when I would have a bit higher amount of protein because I really wasn’t sure how much protein would be good for me. But now I have a better estimate. Also too, I’m sitting here sort of in disbelief at the LBM number and it’s really messing with my head - like I really thought I was way fatter than that. It amazes me how hard it is to accept that it really has been the opposite happening underneath the adipose… it’s like learning how to accept a compliment.

I’m proud of you @Brenda, very proud of your efforts, work, dedication, and endurance/perseverance. :heartpulse:

@Brenda I’m fan-girling over here. Every time I think…“but MAAAAYBE fat is a lever…” you bring me right back around.
I just unsubscribed from the KG group. I’ve had enough IIFYM & CICO logic.

I’ll stick to lower protein…but like, tomorrow, ok? I had a heavy protein lunch. (Actually, Saturday, I’m fasting tomorrow.)

Also…I’d like a meme of this, but instead of Kermit sipping tea, I’d like him sipping keto-aide.

Which health care provider should I go to for a DEXA?

(8 year Ketogenic Veteran) #6

In Minnesota there is a private company called DEXA FIT. In Australia, some citizens are covered by medical insurance such as @richard. I am not. I paid out of pocket. You may be covered , just check. @TomSeest got a DEXA at a local university.

And if you can’t find a local DEXA, you could do BodPod. It’s cheaper, though arguably not as accurate.

I think after a certain age they are part of routine screening for osteoporosis. My Gyn or primary care provider orders them. This is in US.

Search DEXA near you. A college near me (about an hour) does DEXA scans for $50. I haven’t gone yet, it’s a future plan…

Brenda Zorn, you’re my hero.

(Tim) #11

Brenda could you stop being so right? It’s making the rest of us look bad.

(Michael McMurray) #12

This sounds awesome! It makes me want to get a scan and see what is best for me! Are they typically super expensive?

(Tim) #13

Just found this. https://www.dexafit.com/

Location in Seattle, or so they say I didn’t look where. Apparently it’s a $5/month ‘membership fee’ and then a $95/scan fee each time you get a scan. Not sure if the membership comes with a contract.

Might be able to find one cheaper or closer to home though.

(Michael McMurray) #14

Not too bad, I expected it to be more. I’ll research around me and look I to it for sure.

(Linda) #15

I got one in Sydney for $39 but I assume you are in the US?

(Tim) #16

Funny how if you move the A from the beginning to the end of the AUS all the health care costs go up and insurance coverage goes down.

They can be. I bought my first dexa scan with a Groupon. Normally $150 it cost me 99. Then I decided I needed to get another one eventually if I wanted to check my progress. So for $200 more I bought three more scans. It’s a package that can be used over the course of 18 months period and included 3D scans of my body. Then you can see exactly where you’re losing inches if you’d like. Everything is sent by PDF to your email as well as the DEXA printed out at the office.

For what it is, even just the $300 for four scans and the fact that I get 18 months total to use them, I thought it was a really good deal. And I’m certainly not made of money.

I often refer to my personal health care as my second job. Think about it, I’m saving a lot of money as I continue to improve my health.

My doctor ordered a DEXA scan for me and I was so excited, but my results were only about bone density (post menopausal). Were there other results that I didn’t see? I would love to know what my lbm is.

They calibrate them differently for different indications so usually scans for bone density don’t include specific lean and fat mass data.
