Super beginner here. Lost 3 lbs, ate out first time. Ordered salad, w/grilled shrimp, chicken and added bacon. No dressing…woke up and gained 2 lbs! What did I do wrong?? Need tips about eating out and not failing.
Ate out, gained 2 lbs! ugh
Probably nothing - 2lbs is likely just water.
Keep in mind a 20oz diet soda is 1.25lb. Look at the long-term trend over weeks and months, not days. A 2lb fluctuation is nothing unless your starting weight is already ridiculously low.
Both drink and food have weight a typical meal weighs 2-3lbs times by 3 plus snacks and you have gained 7-10lbs in a day
Weight will go up and weight will go down. It’s a lot like measuring the water level when the tide is going out. Some waves will be higher than you expect and some waves lower. Look at hundreds of waves and you’ll start to see the trend. Look at an average and it will be more meaningful.
Nothing wrong with looking at the scale every day. Just realize that you’re looking at an individual “wave”.
Everytime I go out, I also gain. It is probably just water weight from the excess sodium used in the preparation of the food. Give it a few days and it should come back off. To help, you can always have some lemon water. Just keep in mind that lemons have carbs.
I swear, I must be the oddball.
I’ve noticed, on at least four different occasions, that the day after eating at the Cracker Barrel, my weight was down.
I did not deprive myself, I had a good meal. Well, I did pass on the bread and the dessert. Generally, it was the fish and at least three non-starchy veggies, although, to be totally honest, I think a couple of times, I had carrots as one of the sides.
I never have been able to explain it.
Tip number 1: get used to failure. You’re going to experience plenty of it. It will only make the victory more savory when it comes. The path to success leads not around failure, but through it.
Tip number 2: eating out on keto often doesn’t go to plan. That’s okay. Plan to eat in way more often than you eat out. So my tip on eating out is keep it as simple as possible, don’t take chances, and try to eat out as little as possible.
One data point is not a trend. You have to think long term. KCKO.
Weight fluctuates. Usually daily. You can learn to accept it, or fast until it comes off. That usually takes only a day or two. I liked seeing the scale drop everyday, so I fasted a lot.
The body has a setpoint weight that it will try to maintain regardless of our temporary eating forays. Unfortunately, with ill effort, we can raise it over time. Fortunately, with much work, we can also lower it over time.
I’ll use myself as an example of how it gets better. Less than 8 months ago, my setpoint was 230 lbs. After extensive fasting, my setpoint was 170. I went through a month long period of eating high carbs (restaurant food, fast food) and gained 10 lbs. over my low weight. My weight fluctuated daily but whenever it rose above 170, the next day it’d drop down, regardless of my eating.
Don’t fret over small fluctuations, it’s the trend that matters. Don’t expect perfect behavior from yourself. Life is imperfect. Be patient and stay the course.
Next time, order shrimp, salmon, or ribeye steak with a side salad smothered in blue cheese dressing. Get all the bacon and sausage you want instead of potatoes or rice. Ask for butter to put on your meat/fish. For dessert have blueberries in heavy cream (don’t trust them to make whipped cream without sugar!) or just have coffee with heavy cream as dessert.
