So today I ordered a chicken salad I get that is on top of a bed of lettuce and all they had was the chicken salad with cranberries mixed in. I thought well I am 1 pound from my goal weight, I can start adding back in fruit, right?
So. Much. Pain! My belly is killing me! I eat this salad a couple of times a week and never have had this issue. Has anyone else experienced this when they try to add in small amounts of carbs back into their diet? I was kind of hoping to be able to add some back in after getting to my maintenance goal weight, now unsure if I want to!
Ate fruit 1st time today in 6 months, I might die!
Unsure?
I got really bad upset when I ate Cuban food in Florida, Yellow Rice, Black Beans and Cuban Bread with my steak, pain all night long and reflux. I used to eat that kind of stuff all the time without any negative effects.
You have my sympathies, Jill F.
If you donāt mind me asking, have you had any other reactions such as sudden evacuations at either end or bloating? How long was the time elapsed between eating the possibly noxious meal and the onset of symptoms?
I hope you are feeling a lot better now, or at least very soon!
Congratulations on getting within 1lb of your goal weight.
Thanks! Yes I ate it around 1 PM and around 7 to 8 PM started the pain. I could literally feel it moving through my gut, aweful! Once it all came out wasnt pretty but I felt a lot better! Guess I will need to try a couple of bites next time and add stuff like that in slowly.
Or you could just listen to what your body was telling you and leave it as a failed experiment. I see fruit as natureās candy, being from a natural source doesnāt mean itās healthy.
I have little bits of things here and there and havenāt noticed anything like you mention. I kinda wondered whether it was the berries, too.
Stuff happens⦠salads get sprayed with something or even the lettuce could be mildly contaminated. The fruit (or most anything else) could have been sprayed with something that caused your reaction that wasnāt the actual food being the problem.
Do you eat other small fruits here and there? A few raspberries or blueberries on occasion? Cranberries are tasty to me but I generally only have them a few times a year.
If it was dried cranberries from the store or restaurant, it likely had added sugars and seed oils, so perhaps you reacted to that? I did see keto made me more sensitive to picking up on food sensitivities though . Good luck!
Yikes! That sounds awful. I wonder if it was completely unrelated to the cranberries? Were there even that many in there? I wonder if they added anything else to the mix that you could not see (sugars, etc)?
When I eat something I react to, I generally start feeling cramps and bloating about 30 minutes after I eat. And then within the hour, Iām in the bathroom. The food literally goes right through me. And once out, I feel fine again.
But Iāve been diagnosed with IBS-D, although these days the big āDā only shows up in those situations. I take three psyllium husk capsules twice per day, which keeps me on an even keel outside of such events.
I love dried cranberries, naturally dried with no added sugars which have vitamin A, C and anti-oxidants like phenolic acids, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, and anthocyanin on my salad but it will make your salad into a sugary wonderland if you use 1/3 of a cup/25 grams of sugar (varies depending on how they are processed?) and not good if you are just starting keto, what I like to do is take a few (four) and cut them with the scissors into little slivers onto my salad. Thatās all I need to get a little sweet taste and a little anti-oxidant, no reason to eat gobs of dried cranberries and a little graded lemon peel and orange peel or the peel of certain fruits or bitters for a digestive bitter (for those of you with acid reflux).
However, the strange thing is (I must be honest) when I first started keto I was putting gobs of dried cranberries on my salads and it was not effecting my ketosis numbers or blood sugars on the blood meter? I was thinking to myself gee thatās kind of odd, it is just one of those little odd things that happen and you really never think about it or tell anyone about but it lingers in the back your mind and now that Iām mentioning it maybe the difference is, in that it is a natural sugarā¦hmmm?
Maybe it is also the apple cider vinegar (ACV) and various oils Iām placing on the salad thatās stabilizing my blood sugars with the natural sugars and helping me burn or break up body fat[1]?
historical note:
[1] Salad: a term derived from the Latin sal (salt), which yielded the form salata, āsalted thingsā such as the raw vegetables eaen in classical times with a dressing of oil, vinegar or salt. The word turns up in Old French as salade and then in late 14th century English as salad or sallet." ā¦More
Big congrats on getting within 1 pound of your goal weight, though, that is spectacular.
Best wishes with your Keto Lifestyle, maintaining now, and I hope that you will adjust and not have any more painful episodes.
Thanks everyone. Well I had another episode today after eating something different so I went to dr. They are running some tests to rule out stomach ulcers and did bloodwork to check my gallbladder too. I think there may be more to this than dried cranberries! But yesterday it was my initial thought.
I had my gall bladder out in 2003, after I lost over 100 pounds doing Susan Powter (low fat diet, destroyed my gall bladder!) but ovbviously I can still lose weight without one⦠I obiously regained all that weight back in 2004ā¦
Take care, I hope everything will be okay =).
Good decision!
Jill, my n=1 story about adding carbohydrates back into my diet (I am 3 lbs. away from my target weight but I will want to continue to lose fat but add muscle) is basically similar to yours. I can eat a small amount of blackberries, strawberries, blueberries without any problems. For Fatherās day the whole family was over and there were some deserts for the rest of the carb burners that were over. I had a couple of bites and . . . . . yep I had a belly ache for most of the next 24 hrs. I have come to know that if I eat carbs I will get a belly ache and the more carbs I eat the longer the belly ache lasts and the worse it is to a certain point. Another food that will never be the same for me is milk. Please note, I did not say dairy. I can eat cheese and full fat cream and butter just fine but if I have 1%, 2% or even whole milk, I get a stomach ache and my sinuses get stuffy and swollen. I guess my body has realized that it likes keto in a big way and any steps in the wrong direction are going to be a pain in the body. Not everyone reacts the same but this is my n=1 story.
I hope that that is all that is happening with Jill as well, as I hated the pain of my gall bladder and having it out, so hopefully she is just having the pains from deterring from Keto and that is all there is to it. =)
