Assistance with prep for blood test, please

#1

My doc is concerned for my health on this extreme diet and has ordered blood tests. I’m not overly concerned, just want them to look extra pretty. I’m still in hope I could win her over… Should I
a) fast 24 hours, have evening meal then go in for blood test the following morning, or
b) not fast, have lunch, dinner and go in for bloods the following morning.
Currently doing alternate day fasting, so either is easy done, just gotta pick which day.
Thanking much…

I’m not an expert and you should do your own research to confirm… but I believe that the tests do not work correctly if you fast more or less than the 10-14hr window. Do 12hrs and get the test done. Ironically, more fasting makes the results ‘worse’ from the Doc’s POV (even though it is explainable).

There is also the issue of the lipid levels you get back from the test based on being keto (maybe high LDL or even high trigs, depending on your stage of adaptation) once you get the results but at least the tests will be correct.

For more than you can ever need to know about lipids, read http://cholesterolcode.com

Thank you. Just to clarify, I will adhere to the prescribed 10-12 hour fasting window just prior to the test. So in both a) or b) scenario I’ll have a hearty dinner. The question was if a 24 hour fast prior to my “last supper” will impact on the test in a good or bad way.

Hard to know if 24hr fast before your ‘last supper’ is enough to derange the test but longer EF definitely does ruin it. I wouldn’t risk it. I’d 2 or 3MAD the day before.

Thanks for that, I’m leaning towards that, too. :slightly_smiling_face:

Following on from Rob’s comments and link, you have the opportunity to do the Feldman protocol experiment for blood testing.

I’m going to have a go at it. currently I’m eating just one meal a day. Next week I’ll focus more on the fat content for 3 days prior to the blood test. And avoiding coffee and coconut oil in those 3 days.

I don’t want a doctor at my country town medical practice to go off on a statin spiel, if they see an aberrant cholesterol number.

Good luck. Lots of people find it very doable… though I do see quite a few folks who mess it up and get some horrible test results back which sends their doctors into a tailspin.

Be diligent

It might be worthwhile to ask your doctor to a add an LDL particle test. If your LDL come back high your doc may not be happy but if the particle test shows the good large particles then apparently the high LDL number becomes a moot point. Others @Capnbob with better understanding of this can please concur or correct this. Additionally I don’t see an A1c test. Perhaps that’s included in the glucose but in my experience, as it’s as it’s a specific test, it’s usually specifically listed.

My doc knows nothing about LCHF, Cholesterol intricacies etc. I’ll let her have the tests that she wants for now. Will see by her reaction discussing results if she is able to come on board. Realistically if she doesn’t we’ll probably have to part ways. Might as well pay for my own private tests instead of paying out of pocket fees to a doctor who hasn’t got a clue.

The Feldman test looks scary! I don’t think I could eat 5000 calories a day for 3 days. I think I’ll keep to eating normal LCHF a couple of days prior, maybe skip the coconut oil and have more olive oil for a nice hdl number (I’m usually fine with hdl anyway).

I just did day 1 of the simple 3 day protocol yesterday. I actually made it to 5,000 calories, though I missed the part about the coffee & coconut oil - I had a tablespoon of coconut oil and my normal amount of coffee, but I’m skipping both today. Starting to think I don’t need coffee so much - feeling pretty darn good without it this morning
Yes, getting to 5,000 calories was incredibly hard and I had to pace myself. I was doing a lot of bacon, and I think the amount of sodium was starting to get to me, to the point that even this morning the bacon tasted WAY too salty and I had to choke it down. Less bacon today, more cream & eggs

My annual blood test is Tuesday Nov. 27 but not until 2 pm. Damn I’m going to have to eat up till 10 pm or 11 pm the night before.

This is a new, unknown to me VA doctor so I have no idea how he’s going to react to my new levels. I am down 50 pounds since last November. And, with the help of a mild statin dosage, I have always turned in quite low trig and chol levels.

My last A1c was 5.5 in mid June so that should drop a good bit.
