Army doctor concerned about cholesterol levels: prescribes statins

(robin miller) #1

My son, who is in the army, has been on the keto WOL since early this summer and doing great!! But now the army doctors have seen an elevation on cholesterol and have him on Lipitor !!
He has 4 more years in the arm before he retires.

Any suggestions (other than not taking it?) Any insight into taking it for only 4 years? I know the studies and I’ve seen the reports- but how do you convince an army doctor?

thank you all!!

Myself, having a muscle wasting disease and a tendency towards diabetes I would not take it since statins increase the risk/severity of both conditions. But otherwise I would look at markers of inflammation such as CRP and also look at triglycerides and hdl. If those were all bad that would indicate a risk for atherosclerosis that a statin might improve. Otherwise I’d toss the pills.

If he’s not allowed to decline, then the only option (for me) would be to flush one down the toilet every day.

I can’t imagine any study that would point to statins in someone so young.

How old is he ?

I guessed some numbers for him.

Too young for statins likely.

Use

to calculate his risk.

You dont prescribe statins for LDL numbers, you do it for their RISK level.

I suggested that too. However the army could take more drastic action if his cholesterol levels did not come down. So he will take them for the last few years he’s in.

Mostly I was looking for ideas on how to work with the Army doctors or what to say to them to not have them prescribe the meds.

Thank you!!!
