I have found that I have this gene variant. I’m trying to eat a more Mediterranean Ketogenic diet to see if this might be helpful. Is anyone else doing this? Apparently 13% of us have the gene variant but I have a hard time finding out much about it other than I should stay below 22 grams of saturated fat. Also I see contradictory information about coconut oil. Yes it’s saturated so count the grams and No it’s saturated but it’s medium chain fatty acid and okay. Anyone?
APOA2 GG gene variant and saturated fat
To your first question, no I don’t do Med KD. Didn’t even know there is such a thing. You can probably do your sub-22 grams sat fat with seafoods, emphasis on the oily fish like salmon, herring, sardines, etc for your fats. Google ‘fatty fish’ and use the USDA nutritional database to verify the fatty acid profiles. Do the same with ‘shellfish’. Coconut oil is 82% sat fats. Hope this helps.
Dr Terry Wahls discusses this in her revised book, The Wahls Protocol but I think her take is more on the APoe4 variant. I haven’t been tested but I have cardio artery disease (5 stents so far) and conventional keto put my cholesterol levels sky high in the past. So I am following Dr Wahls recommendations and on her third level, Wahls Paleo Plus, which is a ketogenic diet. I have severely limited saturated fats and red meat. She also recommends no gluten, dairy or eggs and my main fat sources are olive oil, avocado, fish and nuts. I also try to do intermittent fasting to get into ketosis and have 4 cups of low carb vegetables each day, as well as seaweed and fermented foods. Initially it is not easy, but I am losing weight and have more energy.
How do you know that’s helpful and not harmful? Are there RCTs of these protocols? Why do you think that your cholesterol going “sky high” is bad?
What are RCTs? I am aware of some of the debate around cholesterol but in the end I trust my cardiologist. I have had one near fatal heart attack and two angiograms so I am sticking to conventional medicine: fear is a great motivator. I also have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which complicates things and I have found that if I comply with the Wahls Protocol I have more energy and fewer flares. It will take a while to determine if the keto Mediterranean diet version of Wahls makes a difference.
An RCT is a randomised, controlled trial, such as the double-blind studies that are used to demonstrate the efficacy, or lack thereof, of a potential new drug. Such RCT’s are difficult to do in the field of nutrition.
For example, the belief that fat and cholesterol have anything to do with cardiovascular disease is based on dubious evidence, some of which can legitimately be characterised as fraudulent. Nevertheless, the persistence of this belief, even in the face of contradictory evidence, is astonishing.
