Anyone want to join me in 30 days dairy free?

(jilliangordona) #1

Starting on Friday, I will be cutting out all forms of dairy except for butter. This has been inspired by reading A Mind of Your Own by Kelly Brogan (highly recomend for ladies in particular suffering from depression, anxiety, or anything mental issues but parts of it are applicable for men as well).

I love dairy. Like LOOOOOOOOOVE it so this will be hard, but I’d like to do an n=1 experiment to see how it effects me through elimination. Butter will come later down the line… I’m just not ready to give that up.

If anyone would like to join me and make this a n>1 let me know!

New - Ideas for Dropping Dairy and Fasting

When are you starting? I know I need to break up with dairy… it’s a bad love affair… I’m fasting now through July 13… then visiting with family. Not sure I can control all they they feed me. At least I can skip the obvious dairy!

I am starting Friday! I am on vacation until Thursday and we have some dairy snacks here to help me stay keto that I don’t want to waste!

You can always jump in later, by no means a hard deadline. Perhaps after your fast you can jump in!

Although… something to think about when you can’t control what you are being fed… sometimes dairy is my saving grace!

I’m in. I am in the middle of reading Kelly Brogan’s book and I heard Joe Rogan’s podcast with her. Since I’ve been considering elimination of dairy (and eggs), I’m recognizing how prevalent dairy and milk solids are. It’s in my grass-fed sausages! (Just had an image of sausages eating grass.) I was going to allow ghee, but because it still retains a tiny bit of milk solids, I’ll let that go too, at least initially.

Super mind blowing isn’t it? Truth be told, I am hoping I can reintroduce dairy after the 30 days… but we shall see. Pumped you are joining me! I am probably going to sporadically post my alternate recipes for some of my usual meals here so we can share!

#7

I’m probably gonna just post all my mistakes, a la WHOOPS there was dairy in that sausage. Actually, I’ll just eat simple simple to avoid that problem. I need to figure out what to do with the dairy and eggs in my fridge. Someone’s getting a gift of food.

#8

And yes, I hope to reintroduce too. This is an experiment to optimize health, not a deprivation. Right??!

I have that book, I should really read it. I have a few I just never seem to get around to. :confounded:

(jilliangordona) #10

I’m enjoying it! It really gets into the weeds of scientific mechanisms in the body as well as lays out pretty straightforward diet choices. I feel like sometimes when I read it it is a a little extreme… but I’m not sure if it’s the writing or just still trying to unlearn the traditional ideas of diet.

She’s a badass. No ‘lifestyle’ stone shall be unturned. Her info on Big Pharma and mainstream medicine nails it.

That sounds like SUCH a good idea, but I can’t imagine what foods would replace dairy. I don’t cook - never learned how - and I can’t force myself to eat things like sardines (which are cheap and easy to fix but gross).

I guess I could live on eggs, beef and salad. I’d really like to do an n=1 on dairy… I’ll just have to plan out what a week of food would be without cream cheese in my eggs, cheese on liverwurst, shredded cheese in salads, etc.

I’m glad you posted this topic. Thanks!

I was interested and considered joining for about 10 minutes. I could give up most forms of dairy. Then I realized I’d have to say goodbye to my beloved cheese. I’m not ready, yet. I gave up my rice and my pasta, but aomeone will have to pry the cheese from my cold, dead hands.

Good luck on your dairy-free journey!

@jilliangordona, game on?
I eliminated dairy (and eggs) several days ago and I am committed to a dairy and egg free month. My weird leg aches are essentially resolved, supporting my theory that one of them is the cause. I’m not sure which I would rather give up more permanently, dairy or eggs. Hopefully it’s not both. Man, that would suck.
How’s it going for you?

(jilliangordona) #15

Thins are good here! I am coming up with some new food recipes that are fun. I am still using butter… but cut way back.

Dairy used to be a quick snack for me… now I am focusing on drinking some bone broth when I am feeling hungry.

#16

Please post your recipes! Though I don’t cook that much these days. I’m living in a tiny home on wheels in the hills and have an itty bitty kitchen. In some ways it makes things easier, but I totally get the dairy as quick snack thing. In a week I’ll try some ghee and see if pain returns. Putting it out to the universe:  please let ghee be an ok food for me!

@jilliangordona, I’ve bailed on the 30 days dairy free. I went almost a couple weeks I think, and then had In-n-Out last night, a double double keto style, then some dark chocolate. No leg pain, (huzzah/knock on wood) so I’ll remain egg-free for the moment and experiment further with dairy. My ghee is calling to me. You doing ok?

(jilliangordona) #18

That’s great to hear that you didn’t have any issue reintroducing it!!

I am missing cheese like crazy… I am sticking it and then we will see if I can reintroduce. This has helped me come up with money yummy recipes that doesn’t leave my boyfriend wishing for cheese. I think I used it as a crutch in a lot of keto cooking… we shall see.

I did find goat cheese brie and Gouda at Trader Joe’s… Im going to pick those up when I am ready to go. They supposedly have less (or no) casein which can be the big irritant in dairy.

I know I’m a little late to the party, but I’m in. I’m beginning tomorrow (Monday). I need to eliminate dairy to see if it’s the cause of my psoriasis flares and also for weight loss.
