Anyone else feeling guilty about passing out candy for Halloween?

Yeah, that’s because of the hysteria meme in the 80s of razor blades and drugs being hidden in candy. Was a hoax, but it was scary enough to spread wide. I never had anything fun like that in my hauls.

All a matter of Types, Amounts, and Frequency. Since admittedly there’s no evidence that infrequent consumption is detrimental, I’ d say the appropriate term is “insignificant”.

It started even earlier in the mid 70s, news stories all over the TV. There was a case of a father who had taken out an insurance policy on his son, then given him poisoned candy, then rumours about needles or razorblades came about. I went looking for the the info on that father, I never forgot the fact that the child’s parent had killed him for insurance money, this is the best I found:

Popcorn balls were my favorite thing then. Most people now have no idea what they are.

Just a quick note before anything gets out of hand to remind folks that there is an expectation of respectful dialog on the forums. I’m seeing a few testy exchanges on this topic, and already had to remove one post that stepped over the line.

Would appreciate it if everyone reads each other’s posts assuming the other person means well, and writes their posts with respect. Thanks!

Just kidding hon. No one comes here.

I grew up in Houston and this was very real, very traumatic for us kids. Here is his story

:Yea, I remembered that one too. So sad.

I am passing out candy on Halloween and do not and will not feel guilty about it! And I’ll probably have a few pieces myself too.
Everyone has their own opinon about it and no one is right and no one is wrong. If you wanna pass out candy awesome, if not ok cool. There is no need for anyone to get their undies in a bunch just because others may have a different thought about it than your own.

I give blinky rings and slap bracelets - very inexpensive toys that cost about the same as candy. I don’t give candy because of ME – I totally know I would eat it! (And with the blinky rings, I can tell which kids are double dipping at my door!). I usually have about 200 kiddos too.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #73

Isn’t that cheating? LOL

I can afford the candy, but why not make 'em pay :money_mouth_face::jack_o_lantern:

Yes I do not want to give out candy. An alternative is single P3 packs and/or little beef jerky packs.

Here’s my story… I had a “brilliant” idea this year that I had to share with my quasi-non-keto hubby…The next trip to Sam’s Club let’s get those little packets of nuts to give out instead of crappy, HFCS chocolate bars that we usually give away. I wish to hell I had my cell to take a photo of his face. Total Collapse Into Sadness!!! :open_mouth: I was shocked to say the least! He took some time in composing his response to me, which was, kids want/expect candy at Halloween, not nuts or any other stupid thing! It took me a few mins to realize that he is the one to eat all the leftovers that we don’t ditch on the neighborhood. :expressionless: Needless to say, I bought a mega-bag of chocolate bars. Keto is a lifestyle, not a life sentence. You have to pick your battles.

We had the trick or treaters today and because of the rain and cold weather, I expect, we only had a handful of kids. I have over 200 pieces of nasty candy left. :expressionless: I tried a piece and it was So sweet and yucky that I only ate a bite. I’ll try to take the one bag back but the open one will need a home.

Simple solution - sugar can be weaponised. Next time you’re in a situation where I would counsel “car bomb” - you know what I mean - just give them something out of the open bag.

Wait a few weeks and donate it to a holiday party.

If I brought in left over sweets and put them in the break room at work…they would disappear.
