I’m on strict keto (around 4 grams daily) and I stay away from all additives in foods and spices. I usually use kosher salt and sometimes sea salt, but for some reson I could not find kosher at any of the 4 stores I went to yesterday here in L.A. and then I could only find course sea salt, and I don’t have a grinder. All I have is that crappy Morton salt my boyfriend purchased but it contains dextrose. I know it’s probably minimal, but I’m so strict that I’m paranoid to use it for fear it will stall me since I cannot get back to the store for a couple of days and I have to season meat. No salt isn’t an option of course. Do any of you guys consume dextrose regularly and stay losing weight and in ketosis?
Anyone eat dextrose?
Dextrose has a high glycemic index. Use it with caution. See listing of glycemic indices for artificial sweeteners in the link below.
KCKO
Just found this: “Morton Iodized Table Salt contains 0.04 percent dextrose or 40 milligrams per 100 grams of salt.”
4 grams of carbs daily? Sheesh. Dextrose in salt is so minimal that you probably won’t see an impact. You truly might see more of an impact from the cortisol caused by stressing about the dextrose. Also, you should be able to find Himalayan pink salt if you can’t find kosher.
Not gonna lie i never even thought to check my salt for sugar and a panicked a little when i started reading this. Lol
Yeah, but I’m a guy and apparently it’s easier to lose weight for us gentlemen. I eat stuff with dextrose and even Maltodextrin in it. I should add that I don’t eat any of it in large doses, but my lazy approach to keto has been incredibly effective for me.
Yes Jean, I learned that the hard way when I first started keto and I was stalled for quite a few weeks. I looked at the spices I was using and BAM… lots of them had sugar, dextrose, malrodextrin, corn syrup solids, or added starch. So important to read ingredients on even the simplist of things. Lots of things have additives for no good reason.
I know! I was shocked too about the plain old salt having additives, and kinda mad. I dont trust anything anymore.
I’m no chemist, but have been given to understand that the minute quantity of dextrose is present to stabilize the form of iodide used in table salt in the USA. Apparently a different form is used in Canada and requires no added dextrose.
I think you have to weigh pro’s and con’s.
Dextrose is used in iodized salt as stated, to stabilize iodide. You see many many threads and posts about lite salt for potassium and sodium balance. Guess what, it has dextrose in it. The pro’s outweigh the con’s in many opinions. Food for Thought.
Yeah, mind the dextrose/maltodextrin present in bagged, shredded cheeses as well.
I’m also privileged to not be a sugar binger but know that some are exquisitely sensitive to it. If you have insatiable cravings for sugar or sweets after exposure, you’ll need to make sure you have clean salt and spices available.
I avoid it, I’m not diabetic nor do I have health issues. It is just a form of sugar I don’t want to consume. I had Haan’s iodized sea salt and it even had it in it. So it is pink salt all the way and some Costco sea salt that only contain sea salt.
Many people do consume it in very small amounts, like in that salt, and have no issues Best you can do is your n=1 to find out if your in that lot or not.
Good luck sorting it out.
I am the most anal person on the planet when it comes to what foods I consume. The shredded cheese did get me in the very beginning so I started buying the block and shredding it myself. I rarely eat out unless I know exactly what’s in my food, salads from Chipotle are one thing I do get. What makes me upset most of all is that a lot of Americans are unaware of what they are consuming and how it contributes to their sugar/carb addictions, even the smallest things. I found out I loved seasoned salt so much because it had sugar in it, no other reason. Trying to replicate its flavor was impossible without the sugar.
Once food chemists realized that the little dopamine blip that sugar gives can be used to make people crave just about anything that’s all it took. Now just about everything with an ingredient label has sugar in it.
I made it easy and stopped eating foods that needed labels like that!
Anyway, no matter what you eat, always, ALWAYS check the label. Look at the nutrition info, take note of the serving sizes, and check the ingredients. Sugar goes by a thousand other names and companies will try to hide it any way they can.
I used to carry dextrose (in the form of Smarties/Rockets) with me when I was on insulin as the fastest way to recover from a hypoglycemic event. As I understand it, dextrose is the mirror molecule to glucose and unlike table sugar, juice or other candy, it contains no fructose.
That said, as mentioned above, the amount used in mainstream salt is trivial and should not be a problem.
