Any Gastric Bypass RNY Post ops out here?

Hi Everyone! I was so happy to find this forum. I am a 14 year RNY Gastric Bypass post op that stopped using my “tool” years ago and have regained about 50 lbs.
Wondering if there is anything different that I should be doing? I honestly am struggling to get over 1000 calories a day with my reduced stomach size, and my metabolism has slowed down due to the bypass so it’s a tricky slope.

I am doing under 25 carbs a day, 60-90 grams of protein and 80-90 grams of fat and hovering around 1000 calories.

I do walk also about 1 3/4 miles 5-7 days a week.

I have been eating Keto since May 29th.

Thrilled with the results! Really looking to see if anyone is in the same situation as I am.

Nice to “meet” all of you!

Lori

Hi Lori, I had a gastric bypass 7 years ago lost 169 lbs but over the past few years put on 50 just by bad habits particularly snacking, I have been on Keto now for 6 months and have lost 48 lbs this is now my way of life. I think that we just fall back into our old way of eating just in much smaller amounts, for me the answer seems to be a keto lifestyle good luck in your journey.

Hi Pauline! Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, all the rules that I swore my life on…not drinking with meals, not snacking, protein first all went out the window… So I am back to following the rules and really enjoying Keto. I am Type 2 Diabetic and my blood sugar has been normal since the second day without medication! Congratulations on your loss! I hope to be there myself 6 months from now. Again thank you! Lori

Hi Pauline, I’m not WLS, but I identify a lot with the long term weight maintenance folks.

There is a WLS sub forum here https://www.ketogenicforums.com/c/health/wls

Lots of info there. Welcome and glad you are using LCHF/Keto/ and other tools to get to where you want to be. Cheering for you.

My wife is 5 years post op and says she can’t KETO because of the need to get in her protein. Any help with bringing her onboard? HFLC can be very difficult when doing it alone.

Kristie Sullivan, now a Keto contributor on DietDoctor, YouTube and cookbook star, had gastric bypass at least 14 years ago. She writes about it/talked on her YouTube channel on a video titled my Failure Story. https://www.dietdoctor.com/what-an-amazing-journey

Hi Phil- I am having no issues at all in regards to Protein. Does she feel that she still needs to do all protein first? I would need to know more about her concerns. I have been KETO for 2 1/2 months and am down a little over 20 lbs. I feel amazing, my Doctor is thrilled with my bloodwork.

Give me some more information and lets see if we can get her on board.

Yes, feels she has to really concentrate on protein first. She’s a BIG fan of carbs and will occasionally need to refocus on protein due to recognizing hair loss. She could subsist on fruit, baked goods, and sweet tea. Gets a little difficult for me to venture beyond a month or so. Yes, I’m being a little selfish.

I would think that if she gets in 65 grams of protein her hair wouldn’t be an issue, consuming a lot of fat has done incredible things to my hair, skin and nails! She has to be at a point where the carbs and all the other stuff is worth giving up. It took me a long time…I researched how to get back to using my bypass most effectively and it’s how I came upon KETO. I would say that I still focus on protein first and just make sure it’s fatty protein, like hamburger meat, steak, lots of Nathans hot dogs. I gained back all of my weight by eating carbs first. I was probably eating 80% carbs and wreaking havoc on my type 2 diabetes. Now I am NEVER hungry and don’t miss the carbs at all…ok maybe when I smell popcorn…but I can deal with that!
