Another thing that's interesting about Keto is

#1

I can cold-turkey quit caffeine and not get headaches and I can over drink a little and not get a hangover. Neither of those had ever happened before being keto adapted. I only tested the over drinking once so it’s not very scientific but I always get hangovers if I drink too much and after not drinking for months I drank too much and nothing happened. I dont plan on testing it again any time soon :innocent:

Is this just me?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #2

Boy, how I wish that were true for me! :bacon:

Nope. Not me. If I don’t have caffeine by noon (if I’m having bloodwork) I have a blaring headache. Over drinking - definitely hangover. Also I can’t have more than 3 drinks or I am

I only have caffeine with my morning coffee so I don’t know if that qualifies me as dependant or what it would mean if I quit. While I am curious, I’m not curious enough to experiment. :stuck_out_tongue:

(MooBoom) #5

Well it sure isn’t me :joy:

My tolerance for caffeine is increased if anything- I can have 4 cups a day instead of barely managing one.

Alcohol? I used to be able to have 4 glasses of wine easily- now I can barely manage one, and it’s a guaranteed hangover from hell.

We are all special snowflakes, that’s why n=1 is so important to figure out.

A Hangover is caused by nothing more than simple dehydration. When dehydrated, the Kreb’s Cycle starts shutting down, causing the hangover symptoms. They are easily avoided, just drink a large glass of lightly salted water between alcoholic drinks. It’s a surely way of making sure you can still do things the next day.

I don’t drink alcohol or caffeinated beverages, so I can’t comment about those. I do find that I don’t get much muscle soreness after excercise. At least nothing like I did pre-Keto.

#8

Hangovers also involve neuro receptors missing the dopamine replacement etoh provides and the increase in cytokines. I often wonder if that’s why people trying to quit drinking crave sugar so much. Dehydration is certainly an aspect of it and makes you feel like crap, but that’s not the whole story.

+1 here for horrific hangovers making over-indulging absolutely not worth it!

I miss my coffee in the morning if I don’t have it, but that’s always been the only time I drink it and luckily one of the few things I’ve managed to not feel addicted to!

#9

With me it’s a habit rather than an addiction but it use to take me three or four days to quit caffeine to avoid headaches, now I just switch to decaf. Drinking decaf all week allows me to actually feel the caffeine when I do drink regular coffee.

Maybe not getting a hangover was a fluke, I’m afraid to test the theory . . .

(Full Metal KETO AF) #10

I haven’t ever had a problem with caffeine. I drink lots of espresso, less than before keto but still a lot. If I don’t drink coffee for a day or two I don’t suffer.

I haven’t drank alcohol much since I started, but I am more of a lightweight now for sure and I feel low energy the next morning. :cowboy_hat_face:

When I first started keto I didn’t drink for a long time. Then I drank less on a few occasions with a slight headache.
Unfortunately, though some may say fortunately, I now find I never get a hangover, even if I push it a bit too hard! And of course my weight loss has stalled! So I’m 3 days in to another period of abstinence.
I couldn’t understand why I suddenly had an increased tolerance to alcohol!
Caffeine I’m not sure, I just drink it when I want.

(Omar) #12

the first time I drink alcohol after keto I drink raki (a Turkish local alcohol drink )

it was next to perfect. I drank three glasses. Was so relaxing and zero hangover.

So I do not know if it is specific to this drink or because keto.

Coffee however was difficult to quit.

I quit cold turkey and it is one of the best thing that I did to benefit my health.

(Scott) #13

I drink scotch wine and beer every evening after work without hangover. I have trained my body well.

#14

I think part of it is that I drink less(smaller amounts with large results) since keto, but I have noticed that hangovers are less severe, almost non-existent. On the occasion I do have a bit too much, I might not feel the best in the morning, but that wears off fairly quickly. Before keto, if I over indulged I would be hurting for most of the next day.

#15

Unfortunately, I still do need the coffee/caffeine to avoid brain-crushing headaches. BUT, I drink far less than I used to.

Prior to Keto, I needed that extra Oomph from the caffeine to keep me going throughout the day. Even had an occasional Red Bull. Now, I have so much more energy than I did before Keto, I’ve cut out at least half of my coffee/caffeine consumption. But, a couple cups in the morning, and one in the early afternoon is really enough to carry me through- without a headache.

Can’t speak on the hangover thing, though.
