An Actress died recently and Keto diet is getting blamed

(smilekapoor) #1

Folks, recently an actress who was following keto diet as per news died due to kidney failure. Is it really possible?

The claim makes no sense. How does a diet that’s described as “adequate protein” overload the kidneys with proteins?

The title is just intended as click bait.

It’s really possible she died. It’s really possible she was on a ketogenic diet.

Correlation ? Yes… Cause? Unlikely.

Of course it’s possible to die from kidney failure even if one eats little carbs…
And it’s even possible to eat an unhealthy keto for the one in question - but nothing hints at that in this case, well, the information is about zero about her diet.
We only know it was keto,. Or someone considered it that. Or someone wrote that and maybe it’s the truth…

“Mishti Mukhejee suffered from kidney-related disease after following a keto diet.”
It’s like saying someone died of heart attack after consuming a diet consisting a significant amount of bread (and we have pretty many examples there, not only one)… It says nothing, basically, just try to blame something. I didn’t even see more in the artisticle, just this statement. I would except some reasoning at least…

If they were blaming the diet, they should have gone into detail about how the diet caused the kidney failure.

I think a lot more people die of kidney failure due to diabetes and metabolic syndrome. If someone on Keto dies in a car crash, it must be the diet.

When kidney functioning is insufficient and the body isn’t able to metabolize protein, a toxicity can occur. This is different than protein poisoning.

Protein poisoning is due to excessive protein intake without carbs and fat balancing out nutrients. Protein toxicity is the buildup of protein metabolic wastes due to under-functioning kidneys.

It sounds like the poor dear didn’t truly understand keto.

Yup but what I also hypothesize is that the spices she added to her food contributed to her kidney problems while in keto. These spices are meant to counteract the damage from the grains somewhat. Turmeric is not as safe as many people believe and it’s sometimes adulterated with lead. Too many variables.

People need to learn that it’s not only about eating sub par 20 grams of carbs. It’s also about eating fatty cuts of meat/fish.

I just read the OP article. Unless I missed something, it says only: “Keto Diet Cited As Contributor”… "suffered from kidney-related disease after following a keto diet"…“Due to keto diet, her kidney failed”. That’s it. No ref to anything about what she actually ate, whether it actually was or was not ‘keto’, or how whatever she ate supposedly caused her kidney failure. Did she eat high protein, low protein, no protein, animal protein, plant protein, grains, rat poison? Was she vegetarian, vegan? Was she under care for kidney disease or issues, if so how long? Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

Translation: “Popular actress dies of kidney failure, claims to have eaten keto diet for x days, months, years (?); doctor/family members(?), with no clue about keto nor what the woman actually ate or didn’t, says ‘high protein’ can lead to kidney failure”.

Ted Naiman is a good source for debunking the old “high protein hurts your kidneys” myth. Can’t recall the specific podcast(s), but he takes it apart quite well. Bottom line: it’s a false myth, and there’s no evidence for it.

Maybe this one?

This is also a good article from Amy Berger.

Now where have I heard that before… oh yeah COVID…

Thanks @dlc96_darren … I don’t think that’s the exact podcast I was thinking of, but Ted has repeated the same message with exquisite clarity in many different places. One of the things I like about him is that he’s such a clear communicator on technical subjects.

Big fan of Amy Berger’s work too.

I’m sorry WHAT???
