I am very new to keto. I’ve always been athletic and a fairly healthy eater so weight has never been an issue. I’m 31, 5’3, and 120lbs, so I’m not interested in really losing weight but I definitely don’t want tobgain any. I’ve just always been fascinated with diet science and nutrition. So my question is, am I too little for keto?
Am I too thin for keto?
I’ve maintained the same weight for 6 months. If you don’t want to lose weight, eat more fat. Maintaining weight while keto is actually pretty fun. I eat a shitton.
Good to know. Keto isn’t far off from how I normally ate so it hasn’t been hard for me. I’ve just been a little more strict on my sugar intake and loving the extra fat! I’m actually having fun with the new challenge. I
I’m 5’ 3” and 119lbs and in my fourth year keto. You’ll just have to be sure to obey your hunger and eat enough rather than restricting calories.
Glad to hear you’re enjoying keto @Missy_Lafferty!
My personal opinion is we’ve been lied to about the toxic effects of sugar on our bodies for decades. It should be considered a poison.
But that’s me.
I agree with you which is why I was sugar free for many years before I even stumbled into this thing known as keto.
Missy, I think you’ll have fun noticing other health improvements as you go keto. The biggies seem to be improved digestion, skin/hair, energy, and mood. Reasons enough!
The metric equivalent is a shitload and 10 shitloads equals one metric fuckton.
What is the real question? Don’t ask for subjective opinions.
Where are you going with goals?
Measure your body composition lately?
Body fat percent?
Health issues? Test them.
Skin issues? Autophagy diet macros and fasting cycle.
Aesthetics issues? Get a reputable trainer.
I’m 5’5 and 107 lbs. Been keto for two years and in this weight range for the last year.
I’m not a keto expert by a long stretch, but I definitely see several posts a day from folks who are frustrated that eating to satiety is keeping them at exactly the same weight (when they’re trying to lose weight). I don’t think you’ll have any trouble remaining at your current weight after a bit of trial and error.
Sweet! The blur/spoilers are back! The ol’ forum is getting back up to cruising speed…
I’ve missed those an imperial shit-ton!
I have a brother who struggles with being underweight. Started a keto diet to deal with mental health issues, severeral months later he finally started gaining some weight as well.
Keto isn’t really a weight-loss diet. It’s a fix-you-metabolism way of eating. For fat people, that means not storing more energy, and getting rid of unnecessary storages when there is a calorie deficit. For normal people, it often means better health, and even too skinny folks can get a healthier body composition.
@Missy_Lafferty A ketogenic diet is not actually primarily about fat loss. It is primarily about metabolic health, with fat loss as a secondary effect, for those that have excess stored fat to lose. It also tends to cause underweight people to put on muscle as part of the health restoration.
That said, most of the new members of the forum seem to have started eating ketogenically in order to convince their scale to show them a lower number. Some of them get quite angry or sad, too, if the needle on the scale fails to move, no matter how many inches they lose. As if the only weight their scale measured were the fat pounds, not the muscle, bone, and internal organs pounds.
I assume that this phenomenon is part and parcel of our unhealthy food culture, and reflects how the keto diet is presented “out there.”
A lot of us get pretty pissed at the inches not moving, either.
I started keto to lose weight but what I quickly learned was that I was sick.
My doctor never told me what I was sick with. He just pushed drugs on me with side effects that were more destructive than the illness I actually had.
This sickness caused the weight gain, the mind fog, poor strength, constant hunger and wasted time, low energy and was frankly reducing my longevity by increasing my chances for heart disease, cancer and mental impairment.
The cause of the sickness was an incompatibility between the things I put in my mouth and what my body had to do to keep me alive and functional. Being a carboholic was destroying my body from the inside out and my body was screaming for help and all I could hear was the poor satiety after eating ice cream… it is a real sickness. An addiction we infect our children with.
Keto started me on this journey of listening to my own body and working with it to heal. Then I learned that my body is sensitive to more than just carbs. It suffers with high omega 6 seed oils (some fats are bad). It suffers with some fibrous vegetables (oxalates, and digestive distress). It even suffers from very lean meats.
I’m not thin but I’m 90lbs lighter in fat… and I will never go back to consuming addictive destructive non-foods just because everyone else does. My mind is clearer and my body is getting younger every day. I have more energy than I did as a teenager!
I attribute it to finally learning how to listen to my body and give it what it needs and denying it the chemicals I artificially got addicted to.
Bread helped humanity survive some dark times and gave us the freedom to create culture and society. Unfortunately, we became addicted to it and it is now crippling us.
So… I don’t think anyone is too thin to not hurt themselves and extend their lifespan with less self induced disease and dimentia.
I am 5’4" 120lbs, based on my experience, you can do Keto, but put a lot of emphasis on high fat proteins like red meat, eggs and fatty fish & shellfish to get essential micro & macronutrients, veggies should come second. If you’re like me and your waist is less than 30inches, you may not have enough fat to fast, so try not to go too long (>16hrs) without eating.
I hope that helps.
