Am I the only Ketoer that rarely eats bacon?

(Susan) #1

I have rarely bought bacon, and not really a big fan of it…is that terrible and bad for my Keto journey? I try to eat eggs once in a while, but I am not really a big egg fan either. I never really have been. Pre-keto a breakfast for me was a toasted bagel laden with cream cheese or toast with peanut butter and cheese on top… obviously I am not going back to either of those things ever…

I do IF daily for 18 hours, (my eating times being 1pm-7pm… sometimes shorter… 2pm-6pm. and once a week I do a 24 hour fast (generally Sunday night 6pm to Monday night 6pm). So when I do eat I have a protean, and veggies, cooked in organic, extra virgin olive oil, and then have a similar supper around 5 or so. Then at around 6 or a bit after I have 2 fat bombs as my desert and evening treat before I stop eating.

I just keep wondering if I should be buying and cooking bacon, is it really an important Keto food? I just keep noticing a lot of the forum members seem to eat a lot of it, so was worried if I am messing up not eating it?

Thanks for all answers, =) Susan

Nah. Some people just really like it :slightly_smiling_face: I can take it or leave it myself.

No you don’t have to eat bacon to do keto. The joke is that we have been told for so long that things like bacon and a bunch of eggs are bad for us and now it’s a bacon party because it’s fair game. I went through an “eat all the bacon” phase but now I don’t eat it that much.

Okay, great, thanks, Safi and PetaMarie, I was just wanting to make sure I am doing Keto properly and not missing anything!

Actually, bacon is a processed food and often cured with sugar in some form or another, as well as sodium nitrite and other things. The uncured version is a bit better on the ingredient list.

I eat it regularly because I like the taste and it is a traditional breakfast food, but it is not one of the best choices of meat. Just like sausage and hot dogs, or even packaged lunch meats - it has stuff added for the processing.

Plain unprocessed meats (pork, beef, chicken, turkey, etc) are probably better overall.

I eat it here & there, but have learned by trial and error that some brands/styles of bacon cause inflammation for me or just have way too much sodium for the amount I would eat :bacon: There’s plenty of other great choices if you don’t care for it :slightly_smiling_face:

Yep. I personally adore it but no worries if you aren’t into it; pepperoni’s a good alternative.

Thanks for your answers/advice, John, Graci and Blue Violet =)).

I think I will end up boiling up a bunch of hard boiled eggs to take to the hospital next time my hubby is in for surgery and I am in the waiting room for hours, and cut up low carb veggies, so I will have things to snack on, while seeing all the other people eating their dangerous foods that they get from the hospital cafeteria … =). Thanks for all the replies!

Don’t forget your salt shaker.

P.S., I don’t really do much bacon either, almost never pork, but we’ll sometimes do turkey or beef bacon. Nope, no keto rule of any kind that requires bacon. I’d rather have beef or chicken or turkey anyway, but that’s just my preference. Do what works for you! That’s all that really matters anyway.

I was married to a Jew for 17 years and bacon was discouraged. However, even in my vegetarian days, I was able to get into ketosis. So no, bacon is not necessary.

I personally don’t like bacon much at all. My user tagline here was “I will trade my bacon for your cheese”. I just dont like it. Once in a blue moon I’ll eat it but after like 1 slice, I’m done.

:raising_hand_woman:‍♀ I can’t have bacon, histamine intolerant…

Thanks for all the replies, everyone =). I just wanted to make sure, so I feel more relaxed about not eating any now =). It just seems to come up often as a food when Keto is mentioned.

Boy, this thread has brought all 5 people in the entire world who hate bacon and eat keto together, it’s a small world. :joy::joy::grin:

There are Muslims and Jewish folks doing keto as well as vegetarians.

There isn’t any one food that’s required to belong to CLUB KETO.

But I would highly recommend Susan that you mix up the fats you’re using and include a major percentage of saturated fat instead of just using olive oil. Saturated fats are important and you get them from animal fat in meats, or butter, cheese and dairy. Coconut oil is a really great source of saturated fats. I was a little off put by the coconut flavor that sometimes comes through but have gotten to like it quite a lot. Good quality unprocessed animal fats like lard, tallow and duck fat are excellent.

I can take it or leave it, mostly I leave it.

Buy it if you enjoy it. Your body doesn’t care where you get your protein and fat from as long as it comes from real food.

I like to break the package into strips of 4 and freeze as I can’t get through the whole thing in a week.

I make the meanest bacon wrapped jalepenos stuffed with cream cheese and cheddar.

I find things like cabbage cooked in the bacon fat adds wonderful flavors.

They do sell the no nitrates stuff but dang it’s expensive.

We buy 2 -3 Kg of pork a month which I then turn into bacon. Just use table salt according to the traditional recipe. I stopped roasting it in the oven or smoking it long ago, 5 to 10 days in the fridge, turning once a day.For those that don’t like chewing on fat directly you can take pork loin… that’s supposed to be Canadian bacon.

(mole person) #19

Can you explain this more? What cut of pork? Does the butcher cut it to slices for you?

(Jennibc) #20

This is why I favor pork belly. I get a big slab of it at Coscto, cut it up into eighths and freeze it. I pull out a piece every five days or so and slow roast - that gives me enough to have it almost daily fry up for breakfast.

I only recently started eating it regularly because I was getting tired of my usual rotation. Do I like bacon better? Yes! But I don’t want that sugar and you can’t beat the price at $2.99 a pound and it being completely unprocessed.
