Alternatives to Coffee

(FRANK) #1

First off, I want to establish the fact that I LOVE my coffee. However, after a food sensitivity test it was revealed I have a “sensitivity” to coffee, among a few other things. So I started to pay close attention to my reactions to drinking my first cups in the morning. Sure enough, my nose starts running and I have to clear my throat many times. Wife calls it “hacking up a fur ball”.

So…for the first time in 62 years I am looking for a morning alternative to my coffee. Juice is out as well as tea - never cared for either. Any other suggestions out there?

You could try bulletproof cocoa. 100% cocoa powder, some cacao butter or GF butter, cream or whatever. Sweetener of your choice, blitzed with a stick blender! Absolutely delicious and very healthy!
Ps, I even sometimes put in a smidge of xanthum gum to thicken it slightly😋.

Please say this was a comprehensive panel like the ones Cyrex does and not a hair one!

I don’t know what do you want from your drink and what the rules of your woe are…

I need to stop drinking coffee myself. I probably switch to water as I don’t need coffein… Yep, it’s not similar but nothing is similar to coffee… Only hot chocolate worked for me in the past but only in my afternoon eating window…
If I want something hot, it’s tea or broth (the latter only in my eating window).
Lemonade actually makes me more awake unlike coffee (water, lemon juice, I am a simple one. but I add elder-flower when it’s in season).

I was searching for some replacement before but now I think water is the best, simplest, purest stuff I can have. We will see if I can do it.

There are none. There are alternatives, but they are not coffee substitutes. They are ‘also ran’.

Just to cover all the bases. I you haven’t already done so, I’d recommend you try different brands, different roasts, maybe even different prep methods. For example, cold brewing leaves a lot of stuff out of the cup you drink and maybe some of that stuff is causing your problems. If caffeine is the problem, of course, there’s decaf.

My sympathies! I’m a big coffee lover myself.

I have weaned off my coffee and switched to green tea in the past, but you said no to tea… Have also swapped it out for green smoothies before, though it is hard to make them tasty and low carb.

Maybe broth, like Shinita suggested? A hot cup of bone broth was all the rage as a morning beverage a few years ago. It also has super nourishing compounds and electrolytes that are especially good for keto.

Good luck! Hope you find something that works for you.

Meth? :joy::joy::joy::joy: Sorry for my twisted humor.

Are you sure this isn’t just from drink hot drinks and loosening up mucous? I hope I never find out I’m sensitive to it! I’ve heard food allergy tests can be inaccurate, especially the ones that look at multiple markers instead of just an individual food. Those multiple marker tests can change a lot from one test to the next or with different labs doing them. At least that’s what I understand. I have an Autistic son who’s had several and all the sudden he has egg sensitivity. But there’s no outward manifestation if he eats a bunch of eggs do I was skeptical of the last test. :cowboy_hat_face:

It was a blood test. Didn’t know they tested for food sensitivities from hair.

They DO, but they’re not accurate which is why I asked. Does that happen with other caffeinated drinks? If not have you tried decaf coffee to verify it’s coffee itself? You could also try a known “clean” coffee like Kion or even Bulletproof to see if the same thing happens. I’ve read a million times about people with coffee issue that didn’t have them with those 2.

It’s not the caffeine, I can drink diet Pepsi with no issues or effect on my blood sugars. I have tried many different coffee brands/types with no difference. I actually have a coffee bar with many ways to brew from espresso, drip, Keurig, etc… I have not tried Kion or Bulletproof but will check them out. I also tried cold brewing and it was ok but not what I look for from a “cup of coffee”.

I used to think that 250 grams of fat per day was nutso.
