Alternative to coconut oil?

(Melissa) #1

I’ve tried and tried and tried to like coconut oil. I’ve tried using it in recipes over the years and I just plain do not like it. What’s a good alternative? So many recipes here use it.

I made BPC for the first time this am and could NOT bring myself to put coconut oil in it.

MCT Oil can be used in BPC. For cooking, avocado oil since it contains MCT’s as well.

Butter or ghee is MCT-rich for cooking.

Have you tried the refined coconut oil for cooking? If it’s the coconut taste you don’t like, the refined version does not have it.

Also, make sure you emulsify a BPC concoction thoroughly using a blender of some kind so it isn’t slimy at the top.

If it’s for coffee, use ghee, butter, or mct oil. If for cooking you can’t beat lard or tallow, and it’s very easy to render your own when you make bacon, or simmer up any number of meat cuts. Once the broth cools; voila you have fat sitting on top of your broth to use for cooking. I never have a shortage of fat to use for cooking, as I’m always simmering up soup bones or something, and they always have fat on them.

Yes it’s the coconut flavor. I was under the assumption that refined coconut oil was a no-no. If refined is ok…I can totally use that!

Get MCT Oil. It is good to use and you get all the benefits of coconut oil without the flavor.

You can also get unrefined coconut oil that has the flavour removed.

Heating the oil for cooking would likely damage a cold pressed oil anyway the same way refining does. There may be good and bad refining techniques but I really can’t advise you there. So, it really depends on how much of a purist you are in that regard. I have some of each around for different uses.

I’ve been using avocado oil for cooking and for making mayo. It’s my favorite.

I use avocado oil for cooking and making mayo also. It can take higher cooking temps, so is perfect for pan frying just about anything. It also doesn’t leave a heavy flavor behind like olive oil can.
