Allergic to many Keto foods

(MiltonB) #1

Hi all! New to the forum. I have mostly health related reasons for Keto. I have both parents and some grandparents with Alzheimer’s, and also have been developing some neurological issues recently. I also have many bad allergies and noticed a while back while on the Atkins diet that my environmental allergies and skin cleared up a lot and I felt really clear headed. So I am in the category currently of looking to Keto for health reasons. I am a 38 year old male and only weigh 152lbs and am 6ft. So, a lot of weight loss would actually not be great for me.

My questions is I have the following allergies…
Eggs
Avocados
All nuts including treenuts and peanuts (I CAN eat coconut, which I’m pretty sure is technically a fruit)
All seafood- all fish and crustaceans
Gluten

Given that eggs, seafood, avocado, and nuts play prominently in this diet. I am wondering what deficiencies I might face, and substitutes.

I can eat sesame, and figured tahini might be something I’d want to eat a lot of. Also, will probably take Algae Oil supplement for Omega 3s (since flax in excess can raise estrogen), and kelp seems like it is going to be my iodine source. Any other vitamin, mineral, or nutritional deficiencies you would like to put on my radar and maybe some suggested alternatives that are high in those things would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Milton

You sound like a candidate for Carnivore Training School. Meat and water. Check it out. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Welcome to the forum Milton.

Wow, that’s some serious autoimmune issues you’re dealing with. I’m sorry you have to deal with those. There’s plenty to still eat not on that list. There isn’t a single required food with KETO. Zero

So you can find your own path that does work for you. I truly believe you might benefit from a real elimination diet like Carnivore to give yourself a chance for your autoimmune system to heal. If none of those foods send you into anaphylactic shock they are just food sensitivities and usually many of those can be reversed. Eggs, seafood/fish, gluten, nuts are in the heavies as far as food allergies go. That’s 4 out of 7 I believe. Are peanuts and dairy okay? Those are two other of the big hitters of most common allergies in diet. :cowboy_hat_face:

For me, I don’t regularly eat avacado, I don’t eat eggs (unless it’s an ingredient in something else (but that can be substituted), I use almond flour in baking (but you could skip all that), and I just don’t do seafood.

It should be fairly easy for you to follow keto, even with your restrictions. :grinning:

Other than the almond flour biscuits, you could probably eat something like this:

The drink is heavy cream w chocolate MCT powder, no-bean chili w sour cream, cilantro and cheese, and salad w pepperoni

Not recommended Milton. Lots of Omega6 fatty acid and too many carbs. :cowboy_hat_face:

I agree with this also, maybe start out with some meat broth then work your way up to bone broth along with the carnivore diet then start reintroducing foods a lot later on you were previously allergic to under the supervision of your doctor to see if you still have any reactions?

You could even check for GWAS or nutrigenomic studies to see if you have any alleles in your genes to certain foods?

I started this woe thinking I had a severe lactose intolerance. Went in to low carb through the intermittent fasting protocol. Within the first month as carbs disappeared from my diet I noticed the lactose issues have all but gone. I was blaming dairy for giving me hay fever as well but as long as I stay away from processed carbs, starchy veggies and fruit I have no symptoms. None. Here I was blaming the cheese on my toast for stirring up my allergies and I think it was the toast that was the problem. I don’t care if I ever eat bread/potatoes/rice ever again.

agreed and great advice.

what can you eat? List all you love and eat and do well on and make it work into your keto plan and you will flourish from there
Make the foods you love fit into your daily plan of keto guidelines and you got it made in the shade!!

Work with every positive good food you can have and you will rock out a meal plan that suits you wonderful!

I do eat eggs and seafood. I don’t eat avocado (don’t like it, too high in PUFAs) or nuts (most are ridiculously high in PUFAs and anti-nutrients).

I eat a lot of – gasp! – red meat (beef, lamb, goat if I can find it). I also eat chicken and pork, though I try to limit those due to the high PUFA content.

Can you do dairy? Olive oil? Olives? Vegetables?

The only thing on your list that I eat are eggs. Never a fan of avacados, don’t eat nuts because I would binge on them, seafood to me is yuck, and none of the foods I eat have gluten. Our meals are basically all kinds of meats, “keto” soups, and limited vegetables. There still is a lot of versatility in your food choices to be happy, excluding the above.

If you are worried you aren’t getting enough of certain nutrients/vitamins, take a multi-vitamin.

Good luck.

Now that is a good looking meal!

That sounds just like me but add 20 more foods to your list. I’m underweight and doing keto mostly for migraines and other health issues. Before starting keto 3 months ago I haven’t had eggs, avocados and nuts for couple of years. I had already started keto once in 2018 but had to quit because of all my food sensitivities, migraine food triggers and gallbladder issues. I gave the nuts a try for 3 months this time and I’m done with that. Nuts are very hard to digest. Sprouting nuts helps. Eggs used to be my worst migraine trigger, but I started eating them once a week, then twice a week, then three times a week and now I have eggs every day. I also eat avocado daily with no issues. I think the reason why some of those problem foods are OK now is that I’m no longer eating sugar and grains, which is helping a lot. I used to be a huge carboholic.
