All the food I didn't eat this year

(Jo) #1

This is my first Keto Christmas, and I have enjoyed myself very much- tasty ham and turkey, beautiful cheeses, Brussels sprouts, kale with butter, and of course bacon… I haven’t felt deprived at all, and I have enjoyed the company of good friends and family. What I have noticed and started to pay attention to was all of the food that I would have eaten in the past without even giving it any thought- trays of cookies and treats, cinnamon buns, foil wrapped chocolates, croissants, platters of crackers, desserts on top of dinner, mashed potatoes, egg nog, and the list goes on…
In the past I would have eaten to be festive, and to share company and socialize. I don’t think for a minute I would have really considered what I was really doing, except perhaps to feel remorse in January and try to atone for my choices by considering a diet of “skinny” soups and salads.

Anyway, I have so much learning about my body and myself this year ahead. Needless to say I am really grateful for this forum and this community.

Agreed, Jo. Nice post. I was thinking similar things this week.

I heard a great quote on a podcast this morning, which I believe the commenter cribbed from something Robb Wolf said. The gist was, “I would never eat this pencil I’m holding. I feel the same way about the foods I no longer eat.” That’s a good way to think about it. Not that “I can’t eat” this or that. Not “I shouldn’t eat” this or that, but “I don’t eat” this or that. That little mind nudge has been very effective for me, psychologically.

I like to remind myself that I choose not to eat whatever food because that keeps the control with me. I use the same line with my man whenever he makes a sarcastic “of course you can’t eat whatever …”

I can eat whatever I want to eat, but I choose not to.

This! It is all about choice and it’s mindfulness for me too.

Also, once you have figured out which foods keep you feeling good and which ones don’t, why choose anything but the good stuff?

I find this works pretty well for me also. It is way easier now that I am not hungry all the freakin’ time of course.

Everytime I saw someone pass the cookie plate and take one, I thought - that was me!

Awhile ago I made pizza for my kids and their friends. The girls didn’t finish their pieces and offered them to me bc I would’ve eaten them before. I piled them on a plate. When they were through there was enough crust and toppings left to make at least 2-3 pieces! I never realized all the unconscious carbage I was consuming.

Me too. As I lose I see myself in others gobbling cookies and saying “that was me”. I feel a bit sad for my old less-mindful self.
