Alcohol on keto?

(Kellie) #1

If I have one lower carb drink like beer , there are some that are only 4g will it jeick me out of ketosis . I started a new job and would like to be able to mingle and make friends but I find it hard because they invite me to places that I find it hard to make keto choices or that have keto choices and I don’t want to say no because I want friends . I’m going to a bar with my co worker after work and I never really drink I just want to make sure that I’m safe with one beer as long as it fits in my macros

Completely understand your concerns! Does it necessarily need to be beer though? Hard liquors like whisky and unflavored vodka are naturally carb free. It’s important not to overdo it though, because your body will divert to metabolising the alcohol rather than the fat, which may cause a stall. But if you only have one or two, you should be good to go!

Alcohol itself will stall weight loss because your system stops burning fat to process it, but as long as you’re okay with that, then yes, having s few low carb beers is fine. Just make sure to keep track so you don’t go crazy.

I’ve been keto long enough, I’m able to go out a couple times a month and have a few regular beers and do fine.

As @Kristin9825 said, the other option is to go with spirits. Just watch mixers. If I don’t want the carb load of beer, I do gin and sodas.

Personally, I just go for straight bourbon! That’s been my drink of choice as of late

I drink a glass of Crown Black straight on the rocks every night. I’ve lost 16 lbs. in roughly 4 weeks doing Keto/IF and with two weekends of events where I couldn’t stay strict on Keto (and I was lazy Keto anyway).

So at this point, the wonderfully delicious Crown Black does not seem to be interfering too much (though I know it may still be slowing my progress compared to if I haven’t been drinking it). But that’s my treat to myself.

I haven’t tested it yet, but I read that Keto lowers your tolerance for alcohol, so you get drunk on less. I would tread lightly at first, just in case.

How about a dry wine. If you’re not sure what to get, go for European wines. Dry white wine usually has less carbs than dry red wine. Examples for white wine: Sauvignon Blanc (e.g. Loire Valley), Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc. Examples red wines: Rioja, Burgundy, Brunello di Montalcino

Is prosecco okay? That’s my favorite

This is my experience.
I also note that I process it out a lot faster than I do when I have carbs in my diet. My theory on how this all works is that you get a better concentration of alcohol in the blood when you don’t have a lot of insulin and sugar bumping around in there. Also, wide open veins due to sodium intake and vasodilation. That’s why I get more bang for the same buck of alcohol in terms of buzz.

I believe that my liver, defatted and not having to deal with tons of fructose, is better able to detoxify the alcohol, which leads to the buzz being of shorter duration.

Of course there might be an greater infrequency aspect as well.

The average glass of 'secco contains about 5 grams of carbs.

I will do it, if I can accomodate it in my count. But I will sometimes opt for brut champagne, as it has less residual sugar. The longer I stay keto, the more sweet sensitive I become.

One of the ‘original’ keto diets was known as ‘the drinking man’s diet’. It consisted of meat, eggs etc. and allowed spirits (not beer and wine). Lots of people drink spirits and even some wine and have great success. I think it is a n=1 experiment we all must do.

The biggest problem for many is that alcohol lowers inhibitions and therefore may lead some to make bad food choices. That seems to be the real issue with alcohol and keto.

Thank you

I see that makes sense. I’m not really a drinker , it’s probably been a couple months since Iv last had any alcohol so one glass of anything and I’m done because I’m buzzed especially if I haven’t recently eaten lol before keto I would eat like bread or pasta and it would sober me up quick but now I think one glass and I will be done I just want to make the smartest choice

Michelob Ultra with water chasers keeps me in ketosis. (yes I know, MU is not technically beer).

And pay attention to @Anniegirl9 on the lowered tolerance business lest ye be clobbered.

(TJ Borden) #15

That seems redundant

(Chris) #16

Find myself ordering and making bourbon waters as my primary drink. And then just neat or on the rocks if the situation calls.

Makers n water. Refreshing

(Alec) #17

This was me all over, which is why I chose 3 years ago to stop drinking alcohol completely. Haven’t had an alcoholic drink since then.

Could you achieve your socialising using soft drinks?

#18

Yeah, but do you have any idea how much soda you have to drink to get drunk? A LOT.

Seriously, I’m finding that the artificial sweeteners in soft drinks seem to stall my progress – I’m thinking they tend to raise my insulin.

I’m thinking they screw with satiety signals too
