Alcohol made me feel better

(chad) #1

Ok so I was at a concert (godsmack and shinedown). And I’m on about day 5 of keto… I’ve been feeling horrible. I didn’t think I was gunna make it. Super lightheaded kinda weak but somehow I’ve ordered 3 double jack and diet cokes (probably 1 diet coke between all 3 drinks) and it made me feel like a million bucks. By the end on the way to the parking lot I started to feel pretty bad again. This morning I don’t fell quite as bad but it still sucks. :frowning:

Makes me want another double just to feel better

Alcohol always makes me feel like a million bucks and Superman when I’m in the middle of it. It’s dealing with the after effects that getcha. You’re switching fuels right now. Better to stay away from alcohol for the time being and diet soda pretty much for good. The hard work will pay off. Trust the process. I’m on day 17 of a one month abstaining from craft beer. I brew my own and have 10 corny kegs just waiting for me. I’m calling September 1st carb Armageddon. I will feel like absolute garbage on sept 2, I will say out loud “ I’m never drinking again”, gradually feel better the days following, and Keto on.

I feel ok at the moment. But from what I understand carb free alcohol isn’t really that bad. It slows the immediate fat burn process because you have to metabolize the alcohol first but it doesn’t kick you outta ketosis. Right? Lol

You need salt, not alcohol.

(Frank) #5

Based on how you were feeling prior to your jack and cokes I’d say you were in the midst of switching over to ketosis. Classic Keto flu. By drinking alcohol, you stalled that process and now you’ll most likely start it over again. There’s plenty of info out there on easing the transition, but like I said, skip the booze for now and the soda ( diet or not) for good.

It really shouldn’t be used as a crutch to make you feel better though!
If you were feeling ropey then you have something in your diet that needs to be addressed not hidden.
Most likely you are short on electrolytes.
If you assume that 1 unit of low carb alcohol stops fat burning for several hours, That shows you how much you are delaying getting into ketosis and fat burning properly.
Don’t get me wrong, I drink, but i have never used it to cure an electrolyte problem!

I didnt really drink to fix the problem. I actually thought it would make me feel worse. But I was at a concert and like to get in to the spirit.

My theory would be that, on day 5, your body is actually better at using alcohol for energy than it is fat. You aren’t fat adapted yet, but your body is doing it’s best to chug along using it’s sub-optimal fat burning capability. When you introduce alcohol, your liver stops producing ketones, so that actually takes away the energy source you left it with. You’d think that would make you feel even worse, but alcohol itself is actually a pretty potent energy source. It sounds to me like, combined with alcohol’s inebriating effect, switching from a poor fat burning system to an alcohol burning system snapped you back into full speed for a while.

I’m feeling you there. I will say this. Once your adapted and well on your way you very well may be able to indulge without too much negative effects. I attended a craft brew festival about a month ago and way overdid it on the barrel aged beers. Felt not so great with that in addition to the corn dog, pizza, enchiladas, and maple bacon donut. Yeh it was a rules out the window day. Fun yes. Doesn’t help with weight loss yes. End of the world no. Did I mention fun yes? You gotta put in the work though especially in the beginning. Just my experience.

Ya I guess I’m going to cut out booze for a little while to help me get right. I went to a falcons football game and only ate a burger with no bun and no ketchup with water. I need to learn to control my self before i allow my self to indulge lol. Were committing so keto on time

Sodium, Potassium, and Magnesium. Avocado and spinach salad everyday. Eat pickles for snacks. Drink plenty of water.
Your alcohol tolerance may go down with no carbs to soak it up so be careful. I’ve found the same with caffeine tolerance.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #12

These are symptom of insufficient sodium in the body, so increase your salt intake. People are healthiest eating around 5 g of sodium a day, which is 12.5 grams of table salt, or 2.5 U.S. teaspoons. People who are not eating carbohydrate need even more. (This 2.5 teaspoons includes the salt already present in your food, by the way.) Be sure to drink to thirst.

Avoid alcohol until you are fat-adapted, both because it has a dehydrating effect, and because it prevents your liver from making ketone bodies. Hard liquor has less carbohydrate than beer or even wine, so once you are fat-adapted, stick to the hard stuff.

(chad) #13

stick to the hard stuff sounds great later lol. I dont feel to bad today. I think I might be over the initial hump. I have been eating a ton of salt, even to the point of my food being crazy salty. tons of water.

just gunna stick to my macros and lay off the booze for a while and get on track.

(chad) #14

Here is today’s motivation. So good. Didn’t think it was gunna be as good as it was

#15

Do you drink diet soda often? I’m wondering if it was the diet coke that made you feel better. Sometimes when I feel really crappy I drink a diet Pepsi. I don’t know if it’s the aspartame or caffeine or some other mystery ingredient but I often feel better. Maybe it’s just my weird comfort food though.

(chad) #16

No not really. Used to drink them occasionally but not often. This was the first one I had

#17

Lol… “Oh what a tangled web we weave”.
