Alcohol and Keto

(Paula Kidonakis) #1

Hi, I’m new to this forum. I’ve been using the keto diet for a dew months now. At the beginning I lost 10 lbs. I have now seemed to stall. I have a question about alcohol. I used to enjoy wine with dinner. I now drink club soda with rum (1 1/2 oz) Is this permitted? I haven’t seen much written on this. I am not very overweight. Maybe 10 lbs. I am a 70 yr old woman and have no medical problems. I never had a weight problem. I feel this diet is good for me

  1. Welcome!

  2. There’s different thoughts on alcohol, so I’ll explain how I view it from my research (of the internet variety) on it.
Liquors are keto essentially. As long as the rum you are drinking is just rum and not spiced or some other variety that may add in some carbs in the flavoring post distilling, then you are safe on the keto aspect of liquor. Red wine in moderation (1 maybe 2 glasses on occasion) is also ok. It has carbs, but if you love it, enjoy it.

The thing with alcohol tho is this. Once you drink it, your body prioritizes it in order to remove it from your body (your body considers it a toxin, i consider it the elixir of the gods). When your body shifts to working on removing the alcohol, the other foods in your body are not prioritized and not burned in the same way they would have been. So while liquor is keto friendly, it does slow your weight loss goals.

That being said, unless you are on keto for some sort of health reason and not just because it makes you feel awesome (my reason), enjoy yourself. and if some rum and club soda is your happy juice, by all means enjoy it!
