Airport security in the USA

Has anyone tried to get a thermos with melted butter and 1 T of liquid MCT through security in a carry-on bag? It’s hardly visible when the butter is melted with the MCT. It could look like residue…possibly? Like “oh my, I forgot to wash it.” Or “oh my, I’m so embarrassed, I forgot to wash it.”

I haven’t tried, but I doubt you’ll be able to get through.

You’d be better off putting it in a smaller container. So long as the liquid is less than 3oz, you should be fine.

I came through security at JFK yesterday with a tub of sea salt! I am in the US for a couple of days on business and had to change flights in JFK. They didn’t stop me, but it could have been an interesting conversation to explain that I am fasting for 3 days and have a tub of sea salt for electrolytes. I’m not sure that they would have believed that that was what the tub of white crystals actually was!

Put it in with your cosmetics in a little container or pill bottle (smaller than 3 oz.) and label it “face wash oil” “moisturizer” or something similar. Splurge on a cup of hot coffee to put it into when you get past security.

ETA: I forgot about half a cup of water in the bottom of my nalgene bottle and they gave me an ultimatum: throw the bottle away or go to the back of the line. Couldn’t even drink it right there in front of them. Pure idiocy, but I wouldn’t risk a nice thermos.

They searched my bag because of the sea salt. They asked me what the powder substance was

I don’t think you’ll get through security with ANYTHING in a thermos. If you want to have a thermos in your carry on I believe it has to be empty.

Thanks everybody for your great ideas. Putting it in a smaller container will be the plan.

Amazed you got a tub of salt through. I had read things like that need to be in a single serving container. Maybe because it’s dry?

And boo to the agent that would not simply dump out the water. How RUDE. I always think people like that must be really unhappy and feel sorry for those around them at work and home.

If you are on your way out of the metropolitan area, they aren’t nearly as concerned. I flew to Montana once with shoes that, to my great surprise, had steel shanks in them. The detectors in New York didn’t catch that, but boy, at the airport in Billings on my way back to New York . . . :scream:

Well…since we’re telling stories. Prior to 9/11 I went through Boston Logan Airport security with a switch blade at the bottom of my purse. I’d picked it up in Mexico months before and forgot it was there. On my way back going through Cedar Rapids Iowa they found it and immediately confiscated it.

Another time prior 9/11 I went through Logan with a small pepper spray at the bottom of my purse. Again, in Cedar Rapids Iowa they took it!!!

Too bad the highjackers didn’t fly out of Cedar Rapids

Yes but WHY do so many of those unhappy people have to work at the airport?

I once lost 1 ounce of toothpaste left at the bottom of a 6 ounce tube for “container size noncompliance”. So glad I have a life!!!
