After two week of keto, I derailed and feel bad

(Mona) #1

I started my keto journey two weeks ago and just in one week i was feeling like a new person. Lost about 6 pounds and have maintained so far. Today, i had some chinese food and i feel super guilty and feel like all my hard work to get into ketosis is for nothing and I wil have to start over. I complete intend on eating keto diet in the future, i love how i feel on it but definietly needs to avoid cheat meals.

I need some words of encouragement and motivation with facts about my situation to move forward from this.

What you ate then has EXACTLY NOTHING to do with what you will eat next. Just get back on the horse and continue.

One of the important Keto mantras – KCKO.

(Keep Calm, Keto On)

You can always get back into ketosis. What happened happened. Learn from it.

We are all human and cannot be expected to be perfect, I am far from but totally okay with that lol!!! It’s what happens next that makes the difference!! You either learn from it, move on and go back to keto, or you completely let one misstep detail your efforts and go back to your old habits and ways of eating!! The choice is yours but it looks as though you are looking towards option one already!! Also, if Chinese food is something you love, why not look for keto friendly versions that may not be exactly the same but that will satisfy the craving?? For example, I love lo-mein, so as a substitute I make Asian inspired zucchini noodles, which are amazing and really filling, while still sticking to the keto WOE!!! Does that make sense? Good luck!!

It’s so easy to feel that you’ve failed and might as well give up. But it isn’t necessary.

Recently I spent about a month with my eating all messed up. First we had visitors, then whatever, then we moved. Now I’m back on track.

Some years ago, I lost a lot of weight on Atkins, but then I fell off the horse when I felt “pressured” to eat a piece of pie. I felt I had failed, and I struggled for many years after. After about 12 years I had regained all the weight I’d lost on Atkins.

Which would you rather do? Get back up and keep going, or feel like a failure and give up? Your choice!

Some people are fine with cheat meals, but I believe I’m better off without them. Too confusing.

No big deal Mona, we’ve all been there. Get back on the horse, until you get fat adapted (6-8 weeks) it can be a struggle to wean yourself off those carbs, but keep at it keep carbs at 20g or lower, its worth it. KCKO!

Thank you for the encouraging words. I am back to my diet this morning. No cravings. Did a urine test, definitely out of ketosis but i will do my best and be back in it in no time.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #8

This is a long-term lifestyle choice, not a crash diet, so one bad day is not going to derail the rest of your life. Although we enter ketosis in a couple of days, it takes 6-8 weeks or longer to become fat-adapted. So it might take you another week, now; so what? You’re doing fine. Just KCKO. In another few weeks you’ll be posting how well you’re doing—promise!

The thing is, the keto-adaptation including ‘keto flu’ is when the body re-starts the metabolic pathways it needs to work in keto mode. If you drop out of keto, the process doesn’t have to start all over again, it continues from where you left off.

I think you’re doing great. Keep it up !

Thank you guys. Believe it or not, i think I am going through the keto flu again. Its been two days being back on keto and no ketones detacted but today i am feeling like I did the first time getting on Keto. I only had one bad meal and fell off the train and now I am going through the symptoms again. Is that possible? Or am i really getting sick?

That’s a question for your doctor.

I started keto 3 months ago and was feeling fantastic. I had lost about 15lbs and had lots of energy. The best part was I felt calm and uplifted? I am disabled so my activity is limited and I was happy with the weight loss even if it was not huge. Went on vacation 2 weeks ago and was not prepared for all the eating out and went out of ketosis. My energy level dropped and I felt the old depression sneaking back in. Went back on keto 3 days ago and am in the midst of the keto flu. For me it is usually a dull but constant headache, irritability, lack of sleep and general lethargy. The good news is that I know from experience that it will lift in the next couple of days. So KCKO is what I needed to hear. Hang in there and best of luck.
