Advice Please - Keto and Travel

Last year I did Keto religiously for a few months alongside working out with a trainer 3-4 x week. I shed about 8-10 pounds, nothing crazy, but it was progress toward the 30 I want to loose overall and most importantly, I felt great.

I left for three months to backpack Central America for my job (freelance travel photographer/writer). I stayed with locals for much of it so I ate what they ate - mainly meat, rice, tortillas and potatoes ( usually on the same plate), fruit and some veggies. Obviously I was kicked out of ketosis but surprisingly I didn’t gain a single pound. In fact, I lost a couple of pounds and a couple of inches.

Obviously my mind is :exploding_head: because how is that even possible? I mean, I basically ate the EXACT opposite to my Keto diet and didn’t gain weight yet I have a cheat meal when I’m stateside and I gain 5 pounds. Love anyone’s insights…

I’m headed out on another assisgnment, this time for 6-months in Southeast Asia. I’m not sure how to stick with Keto when I eat out every single meal, I move locations every two days, and I’m not cooking my own meals. I’d love to hear from anyone who travels for a living and eats out for every meal, how they do it.

Starches and fructose aren’t necessarily evil but too much of them in conjuction with processed food is what causes real problems. It’s likely your keto habits followed you to CA and you focused on the protein and vegetables while staying moderate on the starches and fructose. Since your metabolism and hunger signals were probably working properly, you stored very little of the latter two as fat. It’s likely you refilled your glycogen resevoirs in your muscles and liver but remained at high enough of an activity level to keep from tipping the scale.

Do what you did in SA. Eat plenty of protein and vegetables and be moderate with the starches and fructose.
