Advice needed for my Friend who is just starting out

(Mimi Munro) #1

Hi all,
I’ve just had a great weekend with my Friend who lives in Myanmar. Who knew Yangon is a keto paradise! Amazing pork belly, delish fried cashews etc etc…
anyway, she’s really keen to lose weight and, after seeing my results, she’s decided to give it a go. I made her an eating plan to get her started, and sorted her out with recipes (she doesn’t cook much, so I even bought her a new pan!)
She’s ready to go!
The big reservation is that she has, for years, had very poor eating habits - often very erratic and sometimes hardly eating at all, followed by a heck load of beer. She’s worried that she’s screwed up
her metabolism so keto “won’t work”…
I’ve told her to weigh herself, calculate macros and track everything. And be strict! And stop drinking beer! She does love a project and I have every faith in her will power.
Has anyone had any experience of moving from erratic calorie intake to having a more structured approach to eating? How was it? Any sage advice I can pass on to my Friend over and above the usual
tips and wrinkles…
thank you! I’m paying it forward - keto has really worked for me, and I hope it does for her too.

I think we are all coming from some type of erratic eating.
Might be a better idea to ask her to stay away from the scale for now before she gets obsessed with those numbers.
Secondly, she needs to get into ketogenic foods first before tying herself down to tracking.
Once she is adapted then she can start tinkering and fine tuning. Remember, this should not be taken as a diet but a lifestyle change.

The goal should be getting healthy first, weight loss will come naturally. Obsessing over scale numbers will just cause unnecessary stress.

Damage wasn’t done overnight, so she should not expect results overnight.

Great sensible advice! I’ll feed that back to her. Thank you

My diet used to be sodas, fast food and junk food. It might look hard to switch to eating right but it’s not. It’s just a matter of doing the research and getting to it. I agree about the scale. I weight myself every week, and even though I have removed pretty much all unhealthy carbs from my diet for over a month, and have lowered my calorie intake to 1500-2000 per day, when my base metabolic rate is at 2700, I am still not loosing weight. It is very discouraging. If I was not diabetic I would probably just give up. So at first, I would say the best thing is to concentrate on eating right, then the weight loss should follow.

Concentrate on eating right . So true. In other words, keep calm and keto on.

I just want her to feel good about what she’s doing. And appreciate non scale victories that go along with the ride!
KCKO - I think I might make her a t shirt!
Thanks for your insight x
