Advice from fellow firefighters or their wives for Keto

(Lori Rimmer) #1

I have been low carb for about 8 months and Keto for 3 months. I feel awesome. My husband is finally interested in going Keto with me soon. He is 34 and he’s gained about 30-40 pounds over the last few years and not nearly as active as he was in his 20’s. He also had an injury back in November that required surgery but is mostly recovered from that and back on shift again.

He has been eating my keto cooking on his off days since I started, but obviously when he is on shift he eats what everyone else does. He also indulges in lots of treats, which have always been a weakness for him, so I know that will be another hurdle.

I was wondering if any other fellow firefighters or their wives have any advice on going Keto that I can share with my husband to make his transition more successful?

If hubby is well fed with delicious keto food he’ll definitely want more of it and hopefully less of the bad stuff.

Most of us just have bacon and eggs or steak and veggies but there is an entire world of food to explore. Fat is where all the flavour was, I reckon, we, as a civilisation, have forgotten how to use it.

Protein and fat is very filling. Makes one lose interest in carbs and sweets, especially after satiety.

There are some interesting Keto/Atkins cookbooks, nice pictures at least …

Most meals I can make into something keto friendly by losing the bun or passing on the potatoes. He will have a real hard time with things like spaghetti which is basically pasta and red sauce. I have never eaten at the firehouse but I imagine many large batch carb laden stews, pastas and such. He may need to do some fasting and stash some keto friendly options. I wouldn’t hurt to have the willpower of superman too. Good luck.

I try hard to stay away from the carbage we tend to eat on long fire calls. I’m a volunteer, so don’t work a long firehouse shift, where the communal food is generally high carb. When we do a long call, or all nighter, the food is the same. I will either not eat at all (thanks to keto I can go hard for 24-48 hours without a meal) or do my best to just eat protien and fat, i.e. no chips or bread. I did indulge in a couple cheese burgers with buns on a long call yesterday, and immediately felt like crap. Back on course today.

I’m now at 172, a couple pounds under what I weighed at the end of grade 12, so I’m in maintenance mode allowing the occasional carb deviation. Without fail, I always feel sleepy and queasy after too much. Since I drive the big red trucks, feeling this way isn’t great. I try to limit my carbs to some brown rice occasionally.
