A question about pre-diabetes

Do they determine if you have pre-diabetes after a fasting glucose test?

I am not diabetic, nor did I think I was pre-diabetic.
I am eating food throughout the day and notice my blood sugar exceeding 6.5.
Is that normal for someone with no diabetes? Numbers go up and down throughout the day, and you only determine you are pre-diabetic if you have fasted for hours, not eaten food, and still have a high reading?

Thanks in advance for responses

I’m in ‘Murcia, so I have no idea what the 6.5 equals, but that’s how they diagnosed me as pre-diabetic. I actually never remember seeing an A1C, I just had two BG readings in a row at around 110 and that was all it took to label me.

It was 6.5mmol, I am not sure how to convert that to mg!

I heard if you exceed 6.5 on a fasting glucose test you are pre-diabetic.

But I have been eating, and my blood sugar has risen above that.

I am just trying to determine if there’s anything to worry about with that as a normal appearing number.

Here you go Kate-

Thank you Ron I shall take a look.

Depends when you take the reading, it can be as high as 7.8mmol/L 2 hours after eating (for a non-diabetic).

Quote from this site:
https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/blood-glucose-monitoring

Normal blood glucose levels are between 4.0–7.8mmol/L.

The HbA1c test shows an average of your blood glucose level over the past 10–12 weeks and should be arranged by your doctor every 3–6 months.

I just used the online blood sugar convertor here: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/blood-sugar-converter.html and according to that 110 mg/dL is equal to 6.1mmol/L. Is that correct?

(Ron) #8

Yes. mg/dl divided by 18.

@ava_ad0re - 6.5 mmol/L x 18 = 117 mg/dl
As the chart in the link shows, it depends on when you test.

It was after I had eaten. I am sure I am fine. I had a look at that website and it’s in the normal ranges. I’ve never had a reading above 6 first thing in the morning.

Tell you what, ever since I bought this blood meter I have been doubting so much more. Back to basics I think.

I did exactly the same! The damn meter caused more stress than wondering if I was adapting or not. Now after 6 months it has become a nice thing to have occasionally if I eat something that makes me feel a little off, The occasional test after a fast and once in a while if I am questioning if I might have gotten kicked out. I just look at it as more of a mind tool now. :butterfly:

Thats a good way of looking at it.
I think I need to monitor what’s going on a little more closely.

Sugar levels will generally go up for all after a meal but should be back to normal within 2hours. But this can depend upon what you are eating!
