7 Dangers of Going Keto

I wouldn’t call it spam, but rather trolling. The admin staff will keep an eye on the account and determine how to proceed.

@richard has expressed a preference for not censoring inaccurate information, but instead countering it with good information. What he calls a “teachable moment.” So anyone who’d care to inundate the OP with decent study data, have at it!

You are probably right. Thanks to you and @amwassil for tracking down the sources of the OP’s two threads, so far. The Health.com article that led off this thread is so easily demolished that I wonder they were not ashamed to post it in the first place.

Let’s see what further wacky information comes from this profile.

Almost 8 years here. Will be 8 on 1/1/22.

Not sure why there’s a perception the keto diet is not sustainable. Or restrictive.

#6 – I’ve (re)gained muscle mass. Decreased metabolism is wrong, as several studies indicated increased calories burnt for keto.

#7 – Increased risk of diabetes? How? Really, how? If you’re not eating carbs, then the thing on the keto diet that causes diabetes is…?

(Bob M) #23

Hard to “teach” people like this. It’s like arguing with a vegan – it’s best not done.

I think you’re absolutely correct. Many folks of this forum can attest to that. It’s too bad, really tragic, that many folks who are metabolically sick or worse give up on the plan that’s probably their only hope for fixing their problems. I can empathize. But if I had encountered any issues my first recourse would have been to check it out. Not just to give up and think ‘keto sucks’. Or ‘I just can’t live without …’ During my first 6 months I read a lot of conflicting commentary which I attempted to verify with actual science. And it was not very difficult to do so.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #25

Oh, you’re absolutely right; there’s no reaching the OP, but Richard feels that the corrections to the false info make the site a better resource for people who come across it later.

One of the things I liked best about the keto lecturers I encountered early on was their commitment to the best data out there. Dr. Phinney always documents his lectures with references to published studies, and so do the other researchers I respect. By contrast, I got on to some vegetarian/vegan site that claimed, on absolutely no evidence, that eating beef causes diabetes. Even back then, I knew that was nonsense.

(Michael - When reality fails to meet expectations, the problem is not reality.) #27

OK. Here’s what the OP should have done before making a fool of himself:

  1. The “keto flu”
  2. Diarrhea
  3. Reduced athletic performance
  4. Ketoacidosis
  5. Weight regain
  6. Less muscle mass, decreased metabolism
  7. Increased risk of heart disease and diabetes

Then, narrowed the search parameters to specifics. Of course, that would have taken more than a few hours when all it took to copy/paste a keto hit piece was a few seconds.

(Bob M) #28

Good points.

Though, like you, the whole “keto” (or “meat”, which is the more cited item) causes diabetes is something so monumentally untrue, it’s hard to read anything after that.

If anyone thinks meat causes diabetes, eat as much meat as you want and nothing else. Call us or report back when you get diabetes. We’ll be waiting…

Starting keto can definitely be challenging, but so can quitting smoking, alcohol, and drugs. I think many of the people who quit, do so because they just don’t want to live without junky carbs. Like we point out here frequently on this forum, “Why would you want to go back to the diet that made you fat and/or unhealthy in the first place?” The answer could be similar to the answer for, “Why would you want to go back to the thing that made you an addict in the first place.”

I’ve been keto for over four years. I will not be going back to the way I ate previously because I am sustaining my health quite happily through a way of eating that I consider to be quite sustainable. I wouldn’t be able to do this if the diet was not sustainable.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of bad information and even bad science. If you really are interested in finding out more and not just trolling, you may want to read, “The Big Fat Surprise” by Nina Teicholz. In that book she discusses quite convincingly the games that have been played by scientists over the decades to promote their high carb, low fat diet without any real scientific evidence. It will be quite the eye opening experience for you.

I read this article recently. The author doesnt credit the source

As such it’s not what they know but what they plagiarized. Your call.

(Michael - When reality fails to meet expectations, the problem is not reality.) #32

@marklifestyle
@Elliot-W pointed this out above:

(Mark Rhodes) #33

Didnt see that. Think I’ll shut this guy down. He just joined & now he plagiarizes… plagiarism pisses me off

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #34

I actually think it’s hilarious that everyone “knows” a ketogenic diet is unsustainable and will kill us (and they never do get around to explaining why, if it’s so unsustainable, anyone would stick with the diet long enough for it to be fatal #NOTDEADYET). And yet, they “know” this in the face of well-conducted research that says otherwise. We’ve discovered where the OP plagiarised from, but I am wondering where the authors at Health.com, which is part of Meredith got their “information” about keto from. I suspect they cribbed up their article from a press release someone sent them, which is a shame, because the publisher of the site, Meredith, used to be a respectable magazine company that verified its sources.

Amanda MacMillan wrote this in 2019. Shes been in Time, Forbes as a Health writer. Currently on a undefined hiatus.

Probably in the forums learning😉

From your mouth to God’s ear!

Knowledge of what? You repeated of bunch of disproven scare tactic nonsense. What’s even more hilarious, is that you did it HERE! A forum full of people that have been eating this way for YEARS, most of us have a lot more experience with keto than your 7 years and know this is all nonsense. You clearly went around to other peoples websites, copy n pasted a bunch of other peoples statements, probably out of context and passed it off as your own knowledge FAIL!

The amount of absurb nonsense you’ve posted isn’t even worth the time to quote and debunk, it’s simply spam.

You’ve clearly mistaken this forum for an FB group of idiots that have no clue what they’re doing.

It was nice knowing you!

(Central Florida Bob ) #38

I think there is one case in recorded history of anyone other than a Type 1 diabetic developing ketoacidosis. Think I heard Doc Nally drop that info once. Ketoacidosis is simply not a factor for type 2 diabetics and non-diabetics.

Many foods have addictive compounds in them and are basically drugs in themselves. Tomatoes have nicotine, wheat has those endorphins, etc…

I’m more than well aware of the ketogenic woe and the benefits associated with it.

No need for Kleenexes daily to clean my nose, much less toilet paper is required, much less toothpaste is required, cold showers feel tepid, sleeping covers aren’t required anymore, awareness and neurotransmission has increased dramatically, skin is clear, nails are smooth and aren’t cracked, libido is up, pro social mentality, digestion is perfect, and I’m sure many other benefits.

Us being animals without fur is an indication that our primary metabolism is ketogenic and therefore thermogenic. Can’t wait to walk out in shorts and a t-shirt this winter.

The only issue I have ATM is how to deal with stress from dramatic cluster B sh*theads other than to avoid them.

Even worse, “Daniel’s” picture on his profile page is from a body-building advertisement.
