6 months on Keto stomach issues

#1

Hi guys,
On strict keto for 6 months and still having daily stomach pain and nausea.
Eating over 200grms of fat, 120 protein and less than 25 carbs.
Getting 2.5l + of water, taking magnesium, potassium and having an additional teaspoon of salt.
Can’t understand why, I eat very clean and not soda or anything like that.
I lift weights daily for 45mins and usually feel better after it.
Anyone experiencing similar issues or ideas why?
Thanks

What kind of magnesium are you taking? There are various types and some are poorly absorbed and can cause stomach aches. I found this article to be very helpful.

Also, I find if I get too carried away with salt it can make me nauseous.

Hi Ajax,
Thanks for the feedback, I am using a calcium/magnesium/zinc supplement, I read the article.
I have been paranoid about not getting enough salt since I live in Bali where it is hot ad sweat a lot, but I will play with that!

I’ve been taking Holland and Barrett 250mg Magnesium tablets twice a day to relieve night time cramps in my legs. I usually take them with food but recently I’ve been doing 48 hour fasts and found that if I take them on an empty stomach I get hellish pains in my stomach and feel nauseous for a few hours afterwards. But during the rest of the week when taken with food, or at least BP Coffee, there’s no problem.

Ingredients:

Magnesium Oxide, Bulking Agent (Microcrystalline Cellulose), Anti-Caking Agents (Stearic Acid, Magnesium Stearate, Magnesium Silicate), Glazing Agents (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Glycerine, Carnauba Wax), Colour (Titanium Dioxide).

Some folks take magnesium oxide to relieve constipation - taking it during a fast isn’t a great idea. Try magnesium citrate instead, you can find it on amazon.

I don’t have a lot of nausea problems, but I have beaten the acid reflux and other pain by taking 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar and adding more salt. Tsp of salt isn’t enough for me; especially if I’m exercising or fasting. I generally take at least 3 tsp pink himalayan salt. Don’t buy into the BS about salt being evil; it’s a bunch of crap just like the food pyramid and how many carbs you should eat. Most people are extremely deficient in salt and the more I eat, the better I feel for the most part. Pink salt for the win.

Thanks for that Duncan. I’ll certainly check that out.
After I’d satisfied myself that it was the magnesium tablets that were causing the problem, I’ve stopped taking them during a fast. What I do now is soak my feet in a basin of water with Epsom Salts added.
Seems to work…no cramps in my legs at night.

You’ve received good advice about electrolytes, but I’ll say right now, 2.5 liters of water is probably not enough unless you weigh under 70kg. Most recommendations are to drink at least 3 l, and more according to weight. Exercise? Heat? Increase it. I weigh over 113kg and I aim to drink 5l a day. When I make it there, I feel great (including my gut); I’m “OK” at 4l, but below that I feel crappy. You need that much water to help the fat/electrolytes’ ketone manufacturing process.

I’m going to start a separate post about supplementing magnesium transdermally.

And now I’ll admit, I’m the “usual dumb American” who doesn’t speak metric and I had to use my “Units” app to translate all those numbers for you. You’re welcome. >:-)
