-6.2 net carbs! How can this be?

(Suzanne Stack) #1

Hey Team,

I have found a ‘protein’ bread here in Australia and when using the net carb formula, I get negative 6.2 net carbs. What am I doing wrong?

Here is the nutrional information from the package per 100g
Energy 1130kJ (270Cal)
Protein 25.6g
Fat, total 13.9g
Carbs 5.4g

  • sugars 1.5g
    Dietary Fibre total 11.6g
    Sodium 370mg

Thanks in advance for your guidance. I really don’t want to start eating this if I am calculating incorrectly

I believe Australia shows net carbs.

ok thanks Peter. I will look into it.

Are you sure that it isn’t 5.4 Net Carbs? I thought Australia listed Net like the UK and Europeans do, with the fiber already subtracted so no calculation is necessary unless you’re counting total carbs.

I would also be concerned that the ingredients aren’t keto friendly like vegetable oil and gluten which probably makes up a significant amount of the protein. I personally limit soy to fermented products and don’t eat seeds like flax because they are both high in phytoestrogens. :cowboy_hat_face:

I think it is the net carbs already.

That’s probably a good instinct!

I think @David_Stilley is right that the net carbs is 5.4. That would make total carbs 16g per serving. Bear in mind that food manufacturers lie, and “low carb” food manufacturers are the most egregious offenders. There might actually be 25g of carbs in the bread. God only knows what else they’ve in there that they are aren’t legally required to disclose. Most companies would consider it a fair compromise if you die slowly at 50 but they get an extra couple days of shelf life; restocking costs them more than manufacturing the bread in the first place. :yum:

The 3 golden rules that totally changed my health and made the lbs drop:

  • Don’t buy food with more than 1 ingredient
  • Don’t buy food that can sift through your colander
  • Keep net carbs under 20

It works for me, but obviously everybody does keto differently. I found that once I started eating that way I quickly stopped wanting things like bread, pizza, sweets pretty quickly. That said, do whatever works for you! Just watch out for those sneaky carbs.

Servings sizes are all listed per 100grams in Australia. So at 5.4g per 100g the actual bread slice probably is less than 100g. That might be 2 slices? :cowboy_hat_face:
