3/3 Carlshead Pizza causing diarrhea. Am I lactose intolerant?

(Daniel Beattie) #1

Hi all,

Not good news! 3 times out of 3, I have cooked a carlshead pizza, topped with chorizo, bacon and mushroom.

Each time it has been delicious and I’ve eaten every last bit.

Each time, after about an hour, I’ve ended up on the toilet with what can only be described as some kind of jetstream leaving my body. (Apologies for that image).

But it just doesn’t agree with me at all. The first time I ate it as an evening meal, where I had eaten a lunch that day. And the last 2 times have been as my full day meal to break a 24hour fast.

Starting to wonder whether I’m potentially lactose intolerant?

I end up putting a total of around 165g of mozzerella in this, with 2tbsp of cream cheese.

Throughout my whole life I have eaten pizza, ice cream, drank milkshakes etc on occasion. Never really had any issues, but I probably haven’t eaten this volume of dairy in one sitting before either.

Thoughts? I’m 2 weeks into Keto also.

Cheers

i feel like it could be any of the ingredients and/or the combination…
could be too much fat at once*
could be the spiciness of the chorizo*
could be the almond flour

i think the only way you’ll know for sure if it is the crust is to try it with minimal toppings (not breaking a fast.)

*especially after fasting

If I dont eat for a day, and then eat 2 cups of mozerella cheese, I tend to poop myself too  Maybe have 2 slices and see how you feel? and also, try breaking your fast slower, with a small something something about an hour before the main event?

What @mikki said!! I think any of the ingredients on this pizza could cause it, not just the cheese. test separately.

Many of the aged cheeses are quite low in lactose content. Cheeses that are low in sugars and high in fat are also low in lactose content. Here’s a list that I found online: http://www.stevecarper.com/li/list_of_lactose_percentages.htm

Could it be the psyllium husk - do you use that? It’s well known to help things move along…

Hey Dan, welcome to the forums.

There could be so many reasons for this. Lactose would be low on the list. There isnt a lot in mozzarella. I concur with mikki but would also highlight it could be:

  • low quality cheese (i’ve had this issue)
  • the gall bladder flushing too fast (i.e a lack of veg fiber to slow digestion)
  • too much fat all at once (i.e use less cheese, you aren’t adapted for it yet)
  • too much dairy (for reasons other than lactose)
  • low quality bacon (combined with a flushed gal bladder)

I’ve had some trouble digesting mozzarella, and also bacon, especially in the absence of green veggies. When I eat too much fat in keto pizza I feel like a wreck the next morning. It’s been worth it for a while now but I’ve recently decided to change the recipe and I feel great for it.

When you have a large amount of fat all at once your gall bladder excretes a large amount of bile to deal with it. It’s a super contraction. This can cause diarrhea, as can a poorly functioning gall bladder that isnt processing fats well.

Let us know if you’d like an alternate pizza base recipe.

Before doing an elimination diet, I would test the ingredients in a “deconstructed” manner.

So, that means, for dinner, eat:

  • almonds (whole, not flour, unsalted, unroasted)
  • mozzarella (not melted…just slice and eat)
  • cream cheese (again, don’t apply heat…just cut a piece and eat straight out of the package)
  • chorizo (if it is the variety that needs to be cooked, then cook and eat…otherwise, just slice and eat)
  • bacon (fry it up and eat)
  • mushroom (eat it raw or cooked…whichever way you had it on your carlshead pizza)

If you can prepared a plate with almonds, sliced mozzarella, a slice of cream cheese, chorizo sausage, bacon and mushroom…eat that and see how you feel afterwards.

If you still feel crappy…do it again…but next time, eliminate one item (like chorizo or mozzarella or whatever). This way you will discover the offending factor. Continue until you figure out the problem.

If you don’t feel bad after eating the “deconstructed” plate, then you will have to look at the ingredients or cooking method (as in is the almond flour too old, did you cook the chorizo correctly…etc)
