20g at once or throughtout a day?

Hi,

for practical reasons, I usually eat once per in deep afternoon after my work.
I’ve never paid much attention to that, but I wonder whether something like 20g of carbs and 0.8g of protein eaten at once has a similar effect on ketosis, like that same amount eaten through a day.
Thanks.

It takes as little as 5g of glucose at once to cause an insulin response that will kick you (at least temporarily) out of ketosis. Maybe if you spread those 20g over 2 or 3 hours, it will cut down the insulin spike?

From all I’ve read, eating fewer times per day versus more times per day will give lower average blood insulin levels. Eating all the carbs at one time might make for a higher insulin spike, but that tends to be better than more spikes, even if they are not quite as high. I also don’t think that low amounts of carbs - and presumably not too much protein - will affect ketosis all that much.

Interesting ! It does seem like you are in an uber-state of intermittent fasting, Stanislav_Jirak. That’s ketogenic on its own, isn’t it.

Kidketosupremo - interesting thought and intuition there - wondering how one might test the difference between spreading 20gm over 3 hours vs taking in all at once.

I think sometime we focus on being in ketosis every minute of the day. If you’re eating once a day, you’ll be in ketosis most of the time. Your insulin will be low probably 22 hours out of 24. A very good way to go IMO.

If one has a blood ketone monitor, checking levels before and in intervals after carb consumption would be one method of gathering comparable data points. Do 1 whole week with 20g carbs ingested upon beginning of OMAD feed session. Track/graph observed points. Repeat for another week with 20g carb serving split into 4 pieces and ingested at equidistant time intervals from initial ingestion. What you think?

20g? At 80 calories, it’s insignificant. If they come during your meals, especially in the form of veggies, it’s not worth being concerned about.

It you’re training, 20g of simple carbs right before training is fine.
