2 lbs lost in a month - I am worried

(Nikita Kathpal) #1

I started Keto in April 2017 and after 1 month and 13 lbs went for normal eating habits gaining 3 lbs back in 1 month. Started again in July 2017 and have lost 30 lbs in total from April 2017.

July to October - Total weight loss 21.2 lbs

Now I have hit a plateau, I did take a cheat meal to disturb the plateau but it hardly has worked.

I lose 1 lb a day and then gain it the next day.

What changes do I make now to facilitate weight loss. I have 42 lbs to lose for my ideal weight.
Current BMR 1570
Total calories - 1200 (70% fat, 25 % protein, 5 % carbs)

Thanks!

Looks like you are doing caloric restriction?
If so you may be slowing down your metabolism to match your caloric intake levels.
Seems counter intuitive, but yeah, eat more bacon.

Ya, If I followed that chart, I’d be as big as a house.

Congrats on your success so far!
This is not a plateau. KCKO
Also get rid of your scale and find a better way to track your progress.

I eat White meat only.

You haven’t plateaued. You were expecting a linear change but that is not realistic.
There are ups and downs and stalls on this journey. Be patient.
Take measurements or get into tight clothes every now and then. See how they fit.
You could be getting smaller while the scale stays the same.

(Ross) #7

That would be unlikely if not eating carbs.

For instance, I lost the majority of my weight while eating something like this:

(Ross) #8

why? Most white meat is too low in fat.

(Nikita Kathpal) #9

Religious reasons, Anyways is this chart you posted for women?

(Ross) #10

All good. The USDA chart is…well…from the same source that brought us Ancel Keys, the Food Pyramid, the high carb low fat diet and recommendations not to eat animal fats…so take it with a grain of salt!:clown_face::joy::rofl::sweat_smile:

If I understand what Dr. Fung said in The Obesity Code, even if we are in caloric surplus while eating a LCHF diet, then our bodies will still have a tendency to return to our “SET WEIGHT” which is really a low body fat percentage like we had when we were teens.

How much weight did you lose, over what period of time, with what exercise, eating 5575 calories ?

I dont doubt you. I just cant wrap my brain around it.

Q: Is there a name for this type of Keto ? Ultra high calorie Ketosis ? Has anyone else besides @ggv been able to do this ?

(Ross) #12

Hi Doc!

That was back in the winter, spring and summer of 2015. I started in early February or so at about 190# and by late August was ~ 160#. (I am now 155#). Most of that 30# dropped off in about 4 or 5 months.

I was training for open water butterfly swimming so was swimming 3X to 4X a week, for a total of about 6 mile of fly a week. Add to that 2X / week weight training (low rep high tension multi joint exercises).

My activity level is still about the same but I am now swimming more front crawl rather than butterfly. I don’t eat nearly that much now. I kinda lost interest in eating. A lot of my eating was from habit. Seemed odd to not have at least three meals a day…now seems odd to have more than two.

Cool story thanks for sharing.
I’m still resistant to say what you did is possible. It’s easier for you because you did it ! I believe you, but I’m hoping the more I hear actual stories … the more I will understand and believe.

@anyone else have a similar story ?

I will say … you might have a healthier metabolism with your activity level. And guys with muscle certainly lose weight easier.

On another note, when I learned about Keto … the first thing I thought of was long distance swimming ! I remember stories of swimmers that swam 50 Km straight and lost 34 lbs in 5 days. I think a glucose burner would have hit a wall after 24 hours. Have long distance swimmers been Keto / Fat adapters but I never heard about it ?

(Ross) #14

Oddly, most long distance swimmers in my area are sugar burners. They carb up before an event and often stop for more sugar (glucose gels, sports drinks, etc…) from support boats every mile or so when swimming five miles or more b/c they aren’t bonk-proof like we are!

there is this: http://live.smashthefat.com/why-i-didnt-get-fat/

I guess it’s just more proof it isn’t about energy in VS energy out. I can’t say I really understand it either, just that it works and I’m healthy. I’m sure my body understood what it was doing.

I suspect it has something to do with Dr. Fung’s “set weight” concept. Remove the carbs and the body wants to return to the “set weight” even when in caloric surplus?

(VLC.MD) #15

I love that term.

(Ross) #16

I love that term too!

OK, let’s take a stab at this…
By being in a keto caloric surplus, the metabolism should be cranked up to 11.

There isn’t enough insulin being produced to start fat storage, so burn fat burn.

The body wants to return to previous set weight prior to damage/carbs.

So, big question is in such a case is the body locked into burning the fat we just ate or could it still preferentially burn stored body fat to meet the set weight goal? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

(Ernest) #17

I’d think The body burns through the fat that’s readily available first, dietary fat. But it has to have energy to burn dietary fat, no? So it is double dipping?

(Ross) #18

I think @Zimon is eating a similar amount of cals and has a BMI of 21.

(Ross) #19

That’s an interesting idea. Would that really account for the observed differences though?

Sam in the graph lost an inch off his waistline in 21 days…

(John Somsky aka KetoGrinder) #20

Keto promotes muscle creation, so try taking measurements instead of stepping on the scale. You may still be losing inches even if you aren’t losing pounds.
