Wow, great find! “Cut out starches and sugars, and slimming takes care of itself.” Even fasting is mentioned as an effective quick weight loss tool. Not only that the doctor quoted in the beginning said eating fat for weight control is not new, but rather the modern foods (starches).

Once again, the only thing new is what we’ve forgotten.

That is great.

Credit @UnlearnRethink. It was in his blog. Did not realize he was a member here, too!

How funny the weight scale that calls out your weight, in public, where everybody can hear. Yikes! :astonished:

Brilliant when the doctor says the concept of eating fat and avoiding starches and sugar is “old” advice.

That video is a trip.

Anyone know what was in the Slim-O tablets?

Fabulous share!

IDK… remember those “diet” pills that just grew in volume in your stomach to make you feel full? Ug… they never worked for me. Yea, I tried everything. Been fat all my life. I mean, I’m Italian so pasta was a majority of meals.

Amphetamines, most likely. They were obsessed with them back then. Ask Judy Garland.

I did, she just gave me a deathly look.

That’s great! Never seen that clip before.

But I have heard of Dr Richard Mackarness, and have an original copy of his book “Eat Fat and Grow Slim”, first published May 1958. Mine is a 4th reprint, November 1958.

It’s very much of its time, and has cute and amusing little line drawings scattered throughout.

He wrote about an interesting theory he had about pyruvate*, which I think later on was shown to be incorrect, but in everything else, it seems pretty sound.

It apparently remained popular and in print for quite a few years.

He later went on to become quite well known in the allergy field, writing such books as “Not All In The Mind”.

**Didn’t quite remember this correctly: there was supposed to be something called the pyruvic acid block: a failure of pyruvic acid to be oxidised properly. May not have been his own theory, but maybe something that was coming to be believed at the time.

That was an entertaining video!
