11 months now falling out of ketosis daily

#1

Please help! I’ve been keto 11 months. Blood meter started registering lo months ago…have been measuring with Ketonix. The last few days I’ve gone to bed and woken up testing in ketosis but have dropped out within a few hours. (Comes back up later on)

For instance this morning I tested within range albeit at a low level of ketosis. Had coffee with 1 TB coconut oil, 1 TB MCT oil and 1 tsp ghee…tested shortly after and no longer within range of nutritional ketosis.

Also as a back story I’ve gained 10 pounds in the last 4 months. (Keto was never a weight loss thing for me, I was maintaining my weight before keto without any trouble and continued this for the first 6 months.

Please help. I’m not feeling well these past few days, definitely noticing the drop .

Sorry to read this and your anxiety about it.

Can you please expand on what you ate for the entire day? Everything, please.

That coffee alone is enough to cause weight gain. You don’t need all that fat.

Reduce your fat content.

@ctviggen. o k. First of all, I’m Not sure when 33 g fat and 290 calories became too much fat…you have no idea my size and adequate macros for me. Thanks anyway.

Second, I typically do coffee with 1/2 TB coconut oil and 1/2 tsp ghee but I upped the fat this morning to try to stave off the drop in Ketones.

@Screenack…that was it, coffee with coconut nut oil MCT and ghee. Woke up, tested in ketosis, had the coffee about an hour after waking…tested again 30 minutes maybe after the coffee.

Had a homemade seed bar of sorts with a little coconut oil spread on it shortly after…by 9:45 am which was just under 3 hours since waking I started to feel a bit of a bounce back and tested a third time and did indeed go back up to within range of nutritional ketosis. (Again stilla very low level but back in—and a noticeable difference in how I felt)

I agree with you, @Alz, however, what information you’ve provided us is insufficient to help us to help you. FWIW, I enjoy a stick of butter across my day’s consumption of coffee and tea on Friday without deleterious affect. We are all different.

@Alz I have no idea of when I ever was in ketosis. I know I have been, given my fat loss, but I lack to means or concern to measure it. The thing is, you can lean on ketogenesis to correct so many things with your body. If you simply adopt low-carb regimen of simple foods at the grocer, you can radically improve your overall health.

I still have an incomplete idea of what you consider to be a solid day of eating low-carb. If it’s a “seed bar” whatever that is, BPC and “coconut oil spread” whatever that is, that’s not enough food for an entire day. You can eat too little on a low-carb regimen.

I would address the fact that ketone testing is less and less relevant after becoming fat adapted. If you’re gaining weight it makes sense to me to dial back fats and burn some stored fat. Also recheck your macros if you’re weight has been changing.

But if you’ve been running too much of a caloric deficit your body might be having a famine mode reaction. The best thing is to change up your routine, mix IF, EF, TMAD and cut out any snacks in between meals. Eat meats and low carb vegetables. Mix up your diet. Don’t eat by the clock. Confuse your metabolism.

I really hope that you’re going to get through this and get where you want to be. Body of luck to you. :cowboy_hat_face:

Best of luck, (stupid iPhone spellcheck!)

I’m wondering if there’s something like stress or medication that is complicating your keto. Those could lead to weight gain.

@CarlKeller, well, stress is my middle name. I am in the process of having the Dutch Plus hormone testing done. The weight gain I can see, but kicking me out of ketosis??

This might help you understand how stress can affect ketosis:

If you are (a) not eating carbohydrate and (b) not dead, then your liver is producing ketone bodies, ipso facto. What is happening is more likely that at some point your ketone production and your ketone use are matching up well enough to reduce the amount of unused β-hydroxybutyrate circulating in your blood. But your brain has to be getting its energy from somewhere, or you will keel over and possibly die. If you are not eating carbohydrate, then your brain is not likely getting much glucose, which leaves β-hydroxybutyrate as the only other fuel.

Yes, the liver’s production of glucose might increase at need, but I suspect that in that case you’d be seeing mild effects of protein insufficiency as more gets diverted to gluconeogenesis. Are you feeling hungrier than usual?

Is it possible that the brand of coffee you are using is triggering an insulin response?
