Just asked kiddo. He said everything was stored in the plastic barrels. One in each end of the canoe. At night they shlepped the barrels a distance from camp to hang. They did have to portage through dense brush and he makes a pained face telling me about it lol. The river they were on…the Dumoines…north of the Ottawa river…has areas of rapids also. He says they ate lasagna…not keto of course…burgers, hot dogs, bacon and eggs. The fresher or less preserved stuff got eaten first of course. Anyway, good luck with it. I hope you have a great time.
10day 8 person canoe trip with carb burners, thoughts
Knowing these guys, I will be just fine, I am not by any means an athlete and I am the fittest among them. As for physical endurance this will be pretty low on the scale, we only have a couple miles to go each day I think it is less than 10 total on any one given trip.
I just got off the phone with ~walter~ (I kinda like that) and the space constraint is two fold, I had a little wrong. We are all taking some things we need, grate, axe, lots of rope, in plastic tubs, the extra space in each is 2x2 we each have our own tub to manage they are larger. He recommended to me after a long chat that it was wise to not take any meat at all or anything that smelled of meat. Apparently the bears are waking up late this year, no surprise since he still had snow cover today yet.
As to towing the tubs that would work but he has not tried it on the lakes, he was thinking of taking a cooler but not to be a cooler. Like he said though every thing extra we take we will have to portage, he did say that instead of a large camel back like I was thinking of, to take a small one with pockets and I can have nuts instead. or dried foods. He is not wild about having extra food that is not under control for when we camp, so my camel back would have to go in a tree for the night. The chuck wagon tote is designed to be hoisted into the trees but he said there is a little room on top.
As for the food, apparently TVP is going to be a staple for a couple nights, he is used to cooking because a lot of the people he has taken are useless. If I want to cook that is fine, but we will be eating noodles or rice every day. He is keen on fishing but admits it is hit or miss. When I explained to him the depths of my diet needs he said ok that makes since how about this…I have vacuum sealed smoked salmon, some pickles, all kinds of bacon freeze dried, and I have a lot of lard. I said yes those will work!
This person is rather stubborn and thinks I have fallen for a carnival barkers side show act by being keto
Love this!
I agree with the person who said you regret what you do not do. I would not let any of this stop me assuming I wanted it in the first place (I went camping overnight once in college, a short walk from the car and it was more than enough to last me forever! but different strokes).
I am not worried about the diet. You will burn it. When I got to a restaurant as long as it is a meat based food I do not look to closely at the sauce Noodles are a little hard for me as I have a gluten sensitivity. As for your shoulder, I have a similar lower back stiffness that I thought was gluten induced. And it may be but two weeks ago was on a 5 day water/seltzer/Coffee and Tea with HWC fast. Maybe ate a couple of nuts, some supplements when needed certified gluten free and synthroid for my Hashimotos. Had psyllium at the end. I got the worst stiff back about an hour before I stopped my fast which lasted until the next day. I have no idea what triggered it. My point being, if possible try to pinpoint the shoulder reason, it may not be what you think
Another thing, I personally do not like doing balance related things during a fast of more than 24 hours, such as biking. I am sure it would be fine but it is my preference so I if you plan to fast I would make sure that you have hiked and canoed fasted prior to this. Having said that, each fast is different, on my last fast Day 4 and 5 were miserable which usually does not happen
I am not really sure what causes my shoulder I think it is inflammation, I had a concurring knee issue at the same time, I know the shoulder issue will come back I knocked my self out of keto on Thursday night pretty hard core. On Friday morning it was bugging me until mid day.
As for exercise I have a roughly one hour routine I do every day IF in the morning. It is either exercise to failure or conventional set reps 5 days a week, plus at least 30 minutes on my exercise cycle on the 2 off days of resistance it can be longer. Now that the weather is actually above freezing here I will switch to my real bike and those rides although not as constant will be much longer. I have never changed my routine as it is for EF, except when I went in and I had been cutting my calories trying to push loss once. That fast ended before 48 hours and I did not exercise on the second day, I was wiped. I now and have for the last couple EF’s boosted my BMR as best I can. I am not terribly worried about fat energy as much as protein, lord knows I have enough reserves for fat.
