Hello, I’m a keto veteran. I lost 150 pounds 10 years ago and have kept most of it off. Over the last year, I put back on 30 pounds, and have started back strict keto. Net carbs under 20, total carbs under 40-50, calories restricted under 1800, meal journaling, cardio 3-4 times week, 10,000 steps a day, drink over a gallon of water daily (old habit), taking KetoCore multi, drinking two servings of LyteShow electrolytes, keeping the macros at 70/25/5. I am in 2 weeks in. The first week, significant drop in weight, 10 pounds, happens every time I start back keto. But for the last 7 days, my weight has continued to increase everyday. I have put on 10 pounds of what feels like fluid. I was up 2 pounds this morning just from yesterday. I feel awful and sore and fatigued. I am still 2 weeks out from shark week, so I don’t think it’s hormonal, but I really don’t know. I am concerned I might need to go to my doctor. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?
10 Pounds of Fluid Gained in a Week
I measure and weigh everything to single portion sizes. Pecans, Chicken Thighs, Collards Greens, Brussels, Cauliflower, Avocado, Romain, Muenster Cheese, Monterrey Jack, Whisps Cheese Crisps, One Coconut Fat Bomb a day, 3 eggs daily, bacon every other day, shrimp. That’s my main diet right now
Nothing seems to stand out, perhaps the nuts might cause some inflammation but iffy. Do you use any mayo or seed oils (vegetable, canola, rapeseed, etc)? Possibly the cheese, but meunster is pretty mild I thought.
That could be a big one - high as heck in omega 6 and usually rancid off the shelf. Perhaps try cooking with lard or ghee instead if possible for a while and see if you notice a difference.
Sounds like maybe you emptied your glycogen storage and then refilled it back up. Is it possible you ate more carbs than you realized? Also stress or medications can influence weight loss.
One thing I keep reminding myself is that as the body adapts, it changes. Ketoers ain’t who we used to be a year ago, mentally or physically.
Can’t remember who said it, one of the expert docs on the videos I watch, but someone pointed out that when you get rid of the big causes of inflammation (sugar, carbs, etc.) and your body gets healthier and better calibrated, the subtler causes of inflammation start to stand out more. And one of inflammation’s most visible symptoms is edema.
Case in point, a lot of people have no idea they’re gluten or lactose intolerant until they stop eating the junk food that was causing waaay more trouble than just milk and muffins. I, myself, learned my body’s not so into nuts. I started keto eating them but after about a year, I noticed I didn’t feel so great downing macadamias before a hike. Wouldn’t have detected it with ten other SAD symptoms all competing for my attention.
If this turns out to be you, it’s something to celebrate: You’ve gotten so healthy that all you have left to clean up are the last little annoyances. Might not be a bad idea to do a bit of elimination diet stuff to see if anything stands out.
It was the electrolytes. I cut them out and it all came off in 3 days
Holy cow! That’s really weird. There isn’t anything in there that should have caused much trouble unless the dose was huge. It does seem like the serving size was basically a few drops though. If the dose was appropriate, you might want to find out which of the 6 ingredients was causing trouble. 10lbs is a pretty strong reaction to something!
