1/2 marathon next weekend

  • please help. Started Keto 6 days ago, strips show mod ketosis consistantly and down 8 pounds. I run 3-5 miles daily and have a half marathon next weekend (have done over 50 so that is not new to me). But I have no more long runs and not sure if I am fat adapted so not sure if I should take my normal hammer gel for carbs an hour in or will I be ok without it? Also normally before the 1/2 I had bagel with peanut butter and banana- will I need that? I am afraid if I do eat that I will come out of ketosis and have to restart- thoughts, suggestions would be appreciated!

Fat adaption can take upwards of 6-8 weeks to achieve, sometimes longer for some folks who are metabolically damaged.

You are going to have a hard time running that marathon and to be honest I’d suggest you not even try.

Your body is confused about it’s fuel source right now, you’ve depleted it’s glycogen but it has no idea how to use the ketones you are excreting from your urine.

You will have barely any energy for the next few weeks.
Exercise is not recommended while adapting but each to their own.

I think you should wait until after your marathon since it is so soon and start the keto diet up again after your race. Your muscles will definitely not be ready by the weekend.

I was training for a 12 mile ruck and I can tell you I had just started keto a couple of weeks before that. My first 6 mile ruck March was bad. I chose not to carb load the night before and my body was exhausted and sore. I would wait till after your marathon or decide to carb load the night before and jump back on after your half marathon. This was just my experience.
