Who Saved Your Life?

(Becky) #41

A friend and former over eaters anonymous sponsor, saved my life. Though I had dropped out of OA, and given up, she hadn’t. As the rest of the people in my life didn’t dare mention the expanding multiple chins and increasing inability to fit into ‘normal’ seats, she gently, lovingly addressed it head-on. “I’m concerned about you.” “What can I do to support you?”

Even, as my carb kidnapped brain, asked for her uneaten, bread, soda and dessert. I knew it was breaking her heart to watch me gorge, but I felt powerless to stop.

Then, one day she mentioned her holistic doctor and I asked for the number. I thought the doctor was trying to kill me, sending me home to eat bacon, butter, and eggs…but since I knew food was already killing me, bacon wasn’t a bad way to go…I’m 50 lbs down, 100 to go, but anytime I get my stats checked, they are amazed that I have normal big, BP, tri, etc. I am so grateful for my friend’s love that was brave enough to keep telling me the truth.

Butter Bob videos got me through the initial detox. Ketobetic Ailene and Dr. Westman’s whitecoat video kept me believing that the miracle I was experiencing was true and wasn’t going to somehow backfire on me.

But then, I started seeing dubious videos about carb ups, protein shakes, ketone pills, etc and wanted to know that what I was reading/watching/hearing was ‘credible’ information and somehow I found 2ketodudes.

That’s awesome @Redefine keep up the great work. If ever in doubt check the science with regard to those ‘credible sources’, and there’s always the Keto Tribe here and your great friend.

I saved my own life by researching and deciding 19 December 2015 was the day. I’ve encouraged three of my sisters to adopt this way of eating and they are doing well. I do have to thank the following people who I’ve watched and listened to for the last two years: Prof Tim Noakes (including all of his trial videos—such an awesome research tool), Dr Zoe Harcombe (her saturated fat presentations are brilliant), Dr Stephen Phinney, Dr Grant Schofield, the YouTube channels for Low Carb Down Under, High Intensity Health, Healthful Pursuit (Leanne Vogel), Dr Jason Fung, Marty Kendall, Dave Feldman. Really, there are so many, but all of these people were pivotal. Not to mention my own #WalshApproach trained functional doctor, Maggie Forbes, who has got my copper down and lifted my zinc and vitamin d.

I spent decades feeling awful with Melancholia (a major depressive disorder) and high anxiety. Not to mention asthma, feeling hot all the time, skin sensitivities, painful monthlies, bloating, sore throats and gums and inflamed glands. My appetite has been out of control since I went on the oral contraceptive (aged 23 and 65kg). I no longer feel a constant need to eat.

LCHF/keto is the ONLY thing that has given me a life worth living. I no longer suffer from suicidal ideation and constant self disgust and hatred.

Dr. Dom D’Agustino on the Tim Ferris podcast gets the nod from me. His website (ketonutrition.org) led me to an ebook co-authored by Dr. Keith Runyan (Conquer Type 2 Diabetes with a Ketogenic Diet). My family doc has also been extremely supportive

My mentor Sue Bryce started it all. Part of her story is how she lost weight and overcame health problems. I had given up. Just ate what I wanted and I was so carb addicted that I’d eat whole bags of candy, 1/2-3/4 loaf French or Cuban bread with that tasty, fattening butter… ad nauseum. Her story came up time and again, and finally, my brain stirred and asked ‘what did she do?’ I took a look at her recommended reading list and one by one I’d purchase them each month with my free Audible credit (all business books). The last book just sat there. It was just another diet book. But one day I thought, I’ve wasted more money than this before… why not. So I purchased Wheat Belly by William Davis MD. After the first chapter I gave up all gluten and wheat. In two months my blood glucose had gone down 100 pts. I had another 100 to go.

I mentioned my progress to a lady at work and she said to me you know what’s next right? It will be a natural progression for you to go Keto. I said what-o? And long story longer. That and intermittent fasting got me down those last 100 pts. Now it fluctuates because it’s trying to normalize, but I did hit a blood glucose of 76 last Thirsday. Talk about amazed!!! So to Marta Clinger thank you so very much for introducing me to the Keto way of eating, and then intermittent fasting. It has saved my life. Those who developed it along the way, all the doctors who understand its benefits, now THAT’s saving lives like doctors are supposed to. And for Jimmy Moore and 2 Keto Dudes, thank your for all your time, energy, research, and effort. You have changed lives.

Sue Bryce the photographer?

(Karl) #47

My buddy Cory who turned me on to the 2-part Steve Gibson “Sugar Hill” podcast on the subject. That’s what got me intrigued.

@jbarden the very one!!

Very cool! She’s an amazing photographer. I’ve been an admirer of her work for years. I knew she’d lost a lot of weight, but I was unaware how she’d done it.

I still don’t know how she did it specifically, but that one book was on the reading list - Wheat Belly by William Davis MD, and that led me down my own path. I will forever be grateful that the book was listed. I was at the end of my rope by the time I found it!!

She is an amazing person, I am constantly awed by her. And her crazy good photography skills are just mind blowing. :star_struck: When you allow yourself to go down the rabbit hole, cool things await you. They were for me, anyway.

My special thanks to my brother for introducing me to Dr. Jason Fung. I’m a big fan of Dr. Fung. I have lost 100+ pounds, reversed diabetes and feel GREAT. My brother has been an inspiration and my coach. I would have never made my goals without his help.

Thanks bro!

I re listened to episode 91, Professor Tim Noakes. Carl mentioned this Who Saved Your Life thread.
10 months since the last post, time to get this great topic up and running again?

My South African Dr. Fargher in Parry Sound, Canada got me going, Yes I’m a Banter! Dr Fargher blindsided me after 4 hours of tests and in depth transcribed medical history with his assistants. I was shocked when he said, ‘Read this… The Real Meal Revolution and The Obesity Code, I will see you in 2 months… Oh and you will be going off all your meds!’
Wow, my wife had been waiting in the car for me the whole time and she was pissed at waiting for 4 hours. When I showed her the printout of the transcribed medical report, she was blown away at the detail. The Banting diet, what’s that? Immediately she said, ‘I’ll do it with you’, blindsided again.
Well the good Dr. was right, I am off all my meds including BP ( My BP was 170/95 ish) when I went on BP medication 12 years ago). Hopefully I will now be avoiding the hereditary 4 strokes, 2 heart attacks and the sugar feeding cancer that my father had? Our non scale victories are too many and beyond words… We have never felt better and can only try to pay it forward to our sick friends and family. Our daughters are now very fit keto moms and we couldn’t be prouder. Our 7 grand children eat very healthy non processed whole food. We all feel that it is hard to watch our sick friends kill themselves when they could reverse so many of their problems simply through a very exciting diet, eat the right food that’s all it takes.
I’m excited to see Dr Fargher at the end of May for an electrocardiogram appointment. The last time I saw him my heart rate was 100 bpm resting and now I’m at 40-45 bpm… What?
Anyone with Dr Fargher or a Banter?

In 1998 I picked up a book by Dr. Atkins and that’s where my understanding of a low carb diet began. Many recommendations have changed, some haven’t, over the years. I credit my understanding and first experience with the benefits of ketosis to him.

To start it was Dr Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer, who’s book “The Fast Diet” I found when I wondered that there has to be something other than CICO. The 5:2 diet never resonated with me, but the research that they presented in the book did. From there I found Dr Jason Fung, who really helped me to understand how broken the SAD is. From Fund & Ramos, I came here. This community is my lifeboat.

Also, I have to thank 2 work colleagues who have nothing to do with keto, but intervened and pushed me get help for my severe depression, which had locked me up in a frozen non-existence for about 2 years. Once I got help for the depression I got my energy back and was able to take a deep dive into taking care of myself through diet.

And of course, I now understand that my SAD was in part responsible for the depression.
