What to eat when going to restaurants or fast food

Want to know what I can eat if we eat out. Thanks

Really depends on where you are going. We do a lot of steak with veggies, burgers without bun, you could do pulled pork without BBQ sometimes. It’s rare that I can’t find something anywhere. If they give you attitude about removing something like a bun or swapping out a carby side, I tell them I am allergic and it usually takes care of the issue.

For fast food look at this

For most sit down places, let you order double veggies instead of potatoes, with your protien. Most places have steak. I order Cobb salads a lot

Bunless burgers with cheese and bacon or barbeque are our favorites. Just watch the sauce on barbeque, it’s almost always going to be filled with sugar. I use hot sauce instead.

In general try to avoid any sauces since there’s a good likelihood that they’re going to have sugar and/or flour in them.

Chinese food is particularly troublesome. Getting something like grilled chicken and broccoli without sauce is going to be way too low in fat.

Agree!!..and since Chineses don’t use cheese in their dishes, then I guess you’ll not be able to ask them to put cheese over your grilled meat. The only cheesy things that they offer in their menus are "cream cheese crab rangoo and fried cheese fingers (but full of breadcrumb)…it’s hard to keep it with keto at the chinese takeout.

I’ve started using what I call the “Two Appetizer Strategy”, after I noticed that it’s usually not the main ingredient of the entree that’s troublesome, it’s the sides - usually potato, rice, or bread. So I started ordering two appetizers instead, since they rarely come with accompaniments.

So for example, I’ll order a starter Caesar salad (with no croutons) and the salt and pepper wings appetizer. Together, they’re about the same price as one entree, and make a decent sized meal.

A few weeks ago, I was in a Cajun restaurant. They had seafood sausages on the menu as an appetizer, but also as an entree, with rice and veggies on the side. I ordered the appetizer version, with a salad that had egg, chicken, and bacon. It was a great meal!

Note: I live in Australia so some of these suggestions might not apply to wherever you live-

  • BBQ chicken from Red Rooster.
  • BBQ chicken from Oporto and also their slaw and garden salad.
  • Triple Cheesburger (add Bacon) from McDonalds, throw away bun.
  • Grill’d burger with low carb bun.
  • Mixed kebab meat with sour cream.
  • At Chinese restaurants we get the Crispy Skin Chicken and also Green vegetables in Oyster sauce.
  • Buffet restaurants are always great.
  • Subway bowls with just meat and salad.

Yeah, Oyster Sauce isn’t the best keto-wise but if the wife and I share a plate it doesn’t kick us out of keto.

A lot of the things on my list have questionable ingredients i.e vegetable oils, preservatives, some sugar in marinades etc. but we try not to be too over the top about changing set menu items at restaurants (my wife doesn’t like drawing attention to herself or the keto diet).

But yeah, you can probably request a more keto friendly sauce (or no sauce) but we like to be able to just order off the menu without being too fussy. Works for us.
