They should have cheese. At least when I was able to donate they had cheese
Turned down for a Plasma donation
I just take a water. I wouldn’t even take that, but they seem militant and want to give me something. I’ve been giving blood 30+ years and have never really needed anything afterwards. Increased water intake does help a bit, but you don’t have to get it right away. Giving blood also makes me hungrier than normal and slightly more tired, for a day or so afterwards.
As for iron, I’ve always been over. But I’m also male. I further give blood now (just learned about this recently) to lower my iron content. Of course, I make it up eating red meat.
By the way, did they give you a survey about iron? I’ve been given these for a while now. They want to know if you take iron via a multivitamin or take iron separately. They, oddly, don’t ask about red meat intake. I say every time that I take no iron in anything. Yet I always have plenty.
Thanks for the replies; this is very useful for me. I do not drink black tea, so that won’t block uptake.
From your answers I conclude I can probably do with only water. Maybe something salty like nuts or cheese. I probably won’t start iron supplementation yet. Maybe I will ask them about that next time.
This is good to know. Thank you. They did not ask me about iron. In the future they will start to measure ferritin levels. Maybe then they’ll ask.
The last time I donated blood, my iron was at the low end of normal. I was surprised it was lowish since I eat a fair bit of eggs and red meat.
I’ll be curious to see what it is next time, now that I am trying carnivore.
I’m curious too. I’ve never had an issue, even when on super low fat or SAD diets or low carb or my high meat but do eat a few plants diet I’m on now. But I’m also male, with no menstruation, so we tend to have higher iron for that reason alone.
