Triglycerides divided by HDL- this scares me...I need blood work gurus and researchers input please

(Niamh) #1

So I just posted some new Triglyceride results that I am very excited about.
A year ago was 513, three months ago started Keto and now they are 169!!!

BUT that’s the not the whole story…the rest is pretty ugly.
As predicted the LDL went up a lot to 216.
The HDL dropped to my lowest level ever at 38.
These are not exceptions…I run a high LDL and low HDL a high Cholesterol and a high Triglyceride consistently over 12 years (since I’ve kept track).

I’m 52…Five foot , two inches (1.57 meters)…and having lost weight am now 144 lbs (65.31 kilograms)
So I’m not heavily overweight…

I watched a You Tube video where the schpiel was Trigylcerides divided by HDL
“you want as close to 1 as possible…3 not good…6 you’re going to explode”.

So with that rationale in 2017 I was at 15.7
Edited to correct my awful math, thank you to those who noticed, with a correction that I can live with,169/38= 4.44
Exactly a year ago it was Triglycerides 513 divided by HDL 41 which was 12.51
Today’s Blood work
Cholesterol 288
Triglycerides 169
HDL 38
LDL 216
Glucose 80
A1C 5.0

With recalculations I am very happy with my numbers!

As I mentioned in your other post about this, do Dave Feldman’s ‘protocol’ and retake your tests.

If you are experiencing ongoing weight loss your TG will be distorted.
Have you looked into getting an NMR Lipid panel?

LDL particle size is much more important than the almost useless LDLc…

Thank you,
I took it
The three
Atherogenic index stated “highest risk third”
Framingham offspring Very high risk
Jeppesen risk Highest risk third

I’ve listened to several Feldman’s talks, he convinces me, no doubt about it, that LDL is not something to worry about, but he always adds when other blood work looks normal…

I did go back today for a fasting insulin and LDL particle test

Thank you,

Yes, thank you!
Today had that drawn, will result by Monday…

You must have misunderstood something. The ‘Feldman Protocol’ is a three, four or 10 1/2 days prep for a cholesterol test. This:

It’s not this.

Thanks for this information.
mine just came back at
LDL 5.7
cholesterol 8.7
triglycerides 0.7 doctor is upset cause of the high LDL number but from what I read, I am pretty safe with this low triglyceride, cause my insulin is low.

I find it hard to figure out the numbers too!

Good luck Niamh!

Give it 9 more months. Three months into keto your bloodwork is going to be wonky. And lowering your trigs that much is awesome!!!

Your cholesterol isn’t that high. Mine has been above 250 in the past and I haven’t had a heart attack yet.

Lipids much better after 2 years on keto.

169/38 is about 4.4.

(Windmill Tilter) #10

That was my thought too. I don’t get where the 12.5 is coming from, but maybe I’m missing something?

Michael, thank you for clarifying this for me. I am going to call my DR on Monday and see if he would recheck my bloodwork giving me the chance to do the protocol. I am also going to make some phone calls and see what kind of cost I can get for such bloodwork if he is not on board. I’m tempted to do his 10 1/2 day protocol.

I stayed up last night watching many videos, with a new commitment due to your recommendation. Thank you!

Brownfat and Don Q, Oh my goodness, where/why did I go so very wrong on this calculation?
And how happy I am to see that I did. and with that math can you beleive they trust me to homeschool 6 kids ( the oldest two accepted into Engineering schools  The other four are clearly doomed…

So the 12.51 figure is the result of exactly a year ago, it looks like I might have gotten interrupted when I calculated my past 12 years Tri/Hdl and it appears I stopped with last years calculations thus misreading it.

I am so happy with these numbers now!!!
Thank you again!
