It… Thickness also?
The Magic Pill, grass fed meat, and sustainable agriculture
I guess it begs the question, how big are you? For me, a half pound of meat is about the right amount of protein for my evening meal, assuming I’ve had some protein for my breakfast, which I always do. If you have something like 200 pound of lean body mass, that’s probably a pretty small amount of protein for you. If you have 80 pound of lean body mass, that’s a rather large amount of protein for you.
It does sound like you have a big appetite. I used to be a lot more like that so I do understand what it feels like.
yes. Of course that depends on the size of your hands, maybe the deck of cards is the better comparison.
I’d say satiety just feels like you’ve had enough; disgusted is when you’ve had too much. Maybe you should try eating more slowly, it takes a few minutes (I’ve heard 20) for the brain to catch up to the gut. And things like bok choy can help you feel full (temporarily) without the extra carbs of pasta.
Satiety = Disgusted
I think so, sort of - along a spectrum.
I think it is associated with “palate fatigue”.
For example, you might like hot-fudge sundaes.
After the third one, maybe, not so much.
Push down two more and you have probably moved from:
Like a lot -> like a bit -> can give or take -> I’m full (satiety) -> disgusted
It is probably best to have the last few bytes of your fatty meal get you satiety.
Note also - from Robb Wolf’s latest book.
You can mess up that chain very easily.
People in ice cream eating contests get to the “I’m full” stage and add a couple of crispy and salty fries.
Then they go on as if they were back in the “Like a lot” phase.
I think the same could happen with hamburgers.
Line up 3 double quarter pounders.
Remove all carbs (buns and ketchup) and start in - maybe the third pair of patties isn’t so appealing.
Line up 3 double quarter pounders (keeping the buns) and some fries.
Start eating - after the second plus half the bag of fries you have obviously eaten more than in the other case but, at least to me, you are actually still ready to eat more than in the other case.
I’ve always steered clear of buffet style restaurants for exactly that reason! You can definitely get sick of fried chicken … and then move on to pizza. then some garlic string beans and now it’s time to sample that mac n cheese. But I still stand by “slow down”, because eventually your body will catch up and tell you it’s full, if you wait for it.
What’s your preferred preparation of honey bee eggs? I usually make them soft poached but I’m curious how others eat them
Hi Cloudy,
I’m on the smallish size as well. I find that frequently I will eat until I’m satisfied and then about 10 minutes later my body realizes it is full. If after 10 minutes it turns out I am still a little hungry I will have a few macadamia nuts and then I’m fine.

I actually try to use this effect (palate fatigue) to my advantage.
If I am shooting for bacon and eggs as one of three meals in a day, I’ll stick with 2 eggs, 3 strips of bacon and some salt and pepper - pretty boring and feel satiated afterward.
If I am doing one-meal-a-day I’ll do 4 eggs, 5 strips of bacon, I’ll add cayenne pepper and a couple of ounces of cream cheese and stir it all together (with a side of sauteed vegetables, steak etc. whatever else I need to get 1800 calories in the meal). 4 eggs and 5 strips of bacon is much easier to finish with some cayenne and melted cream cheese mixed in - but sort of a chore if only adding salt and pepper.
Early on in keto I found that if I tried to make each meal a flavorful masterpiece, it was way to easy to over consume or having to live with feeling unsaited. Much easier to keep the smaller meals plain and larger meals spicy/flavorful.
awesome tip, I think you’re exactly right. I’ve been eating my ab favorite foods because they’re allowed, most of which are extremely flavorful, and so feeling a bit of a need to watch the portion size. I will try dialing it down to things I like, not things (like smoked salmon) that I could eat six pounds of if left to my own devices.
I didn’t say that very well, did I…
Actually, the guy sells bee hives and equipment and has a pretty sizable number of hives that he harvests honey from. According to what I can see, it’s not unusual for him to sell 30 to 50 quarts of honey a week. (A hive ain’t cheap, either.) Might not be big to some but for a backyard type, that’s huge. Eggs are a sideline, I think mostly something his wife wants. He only has 60 or so hens so he’s not selling enough to really make much. But he has a half dozen or so customers that patronize him for eggs and they often buy honey, too. I will confess, I buy a jar or two a year. We use very little but once in a while, a little.
There are actually two or three other places that I’ve gotten eggs from that are local but I like his the best. They’re also the cheapest at $1.75/doz. He was at $1.50/doz until the later part of last year when he decided he needed to up the price. He could get $4 to $5 if he wanted to, not sure why he doesn’t do it. But hey, I’m gonna ride that train as long as it’s rollin’. (Have already put a bug in his ear a couple of times about selling me his equipment, maybe even the hens if they’re still laying decently, when he doesn’t want chickens anymore.)
